leaving food out for a puppy Hello all. I just got back from putting a deposit down on a male yorkie, and I was asking the breeder some questions. she said to leave the food out all day. I always thought that was not a good idea. what do you all say. thanks in advance. |
Some people free feed like that, and some feed at scheduled times and pick up the food if not eaten after a certain period of time... I like to keep food out for Pippa all the time, she is 14 weeks but really small and so while I don't really "free feed", I put out small amounts four times a day and I don't pick it up...so she doesn't have unlimited access, but she has all the time she needs to eat...does that make sense? I also keep a little kibble in her pen at night, it's just too long for a 24 oz puppy to go without eating... |
I feed mine according to their age, but I always leave a little of kibble out for them:rolleyes: |
You can free feed as long as your dog knows when to stop. Most Yorkies do well with this but some eat too much if it isn't regulated. |
I used to free feed and I think its a great way to feed BUT I have a big dog who gobbles it up if Im not watching lol...so now I feed 3 times a day..morning, noon and supper...now THEY gobble it up and I dont have to worry about my big dog eating it..they each get 1/4 cup at a time...although morning meals seem to be eaten the other two meals they dont usually eat everything in their bowls...they maintain a nice healthy wieght and seem satisfied.. I have 2 yorkies. One will eat well with free feeding just a bit here and there with no issues. The other will attack the food dish and inhale all the food in a minute. And if I refill it he will eat the next bowl too! I like best when they are young Not to free feed. Just 4 small meals at scheduled times. It made it alot easier to potty train. I knew when they'd need to poo. I did also give a late night snack to my 1 pounder to hold off any blood suger issues. |
I think it depends on the dogs personalities. You can try it, and if he eats to much when you free feed then only put it down a couple of times a day. |
We free feed here, with Parker being so tiny (less then 2 pounds) I feel its safe to keep his kibble out for him to graze on. I am scared of if he plays too hard and what not he could fall into low blood sugar. Leaving it out allows him to have nibbles here and there out through the day. He does get wet food once a day and that is left out for a period of time after that I take that away. Hope this helps, and congrats on the new baby!!! :D |
