Three Year Rabies for Yorkies? Hi, Can anyone provide advice on if I should get the 3-year rabies shot for my Yorkies (5lbs and 8lbs). I get these for my cats all the time, as it cuts down on the chances of injection site sarcoma. But I'm concerned with the size of the dogs and all that medicine going into such a little body. Is less poking better in this case? Thanks. Teresa |
Some states require rabies shot every year, which is mostly the southern states. I would definately get the rabies shot. Ask the Vet. if your dog could have just a little of the serium at a time. |
In Michigan we give it every three years. |
Most of the time the same vaccine is used for three years and one year. So in the states that require them getting a rabies vaccine every year, they are in fact injecting them with the three year vaccine. Also by law, you have to get the entire rabies vaccine, unlike the distemper vaccine where you can only give half. If your dog is going to have a reaction to the rabies vaccine you would have noticed when he got his rabies as a puppy |
I'd talk with the vet and see if the three year is safe for yorkies. If it is I'd get it. |
3 year shot I've been getting the 3 year shots for all my yorkies for the last 17 years. The only shot I wouldn't get is the lepto since it tends to cause the worst reactions, especially in yorkies |

How often you vaccinate is determined by the law in your state. Some states don't have the option of a three year rabies booster. You can look up the rabies law in your state here: http://www.animallaw.info/articles/a...atedoglaws.htm What many people don't realize is that the same formula is used whether or not it is a one year or three year booster. They are just packaged differently to satisfy different state requirements. This was printed in the Wall Street Journal on July 1, 2002: One company, Pfizer Inc., decided to test its one-year rabies vaccine on live animals and discovered it lasted for at least three years. It sells the identical formula simply packaged under different labels — Defensor 1 and Defensor 3 — to satisfy different state vaccination requirements. Considering the possible risks and side effects from rabies shots, it's horrible to think that in some states we are forced to over vaccinate our pets. |
The one year and three year rabies vaccines are the exact same thing |
