Go Raw?
 
I'm looking into goinbg raw. My shih tzu just has so many food issues and I've tried everything else, but I'm feeling a little anxious. Will I not give them enough of something important? Will I be able to find the meats that I can afford but still be good? I'm kinda ignorant about food in general(raised on McDonalds myself) and worry I will fail my babies somehow. And my Vet isn't really susportive. Could I just give them chicken legs, whole eggs and ground turkey with grocery store livers(in moderation)? I feel like an idiot. I worry I'm in over my head. HELP!!

I give mine raw but premade. They absolutely love the freeze dried and my 2 Malts are extremely picky unlike Peanut that will eat any dog food. You can always supplement their diet wih missing link.

I give pre-made too (Nature's Variety) but the more I read about feeding raw yourself, the easier it seems. There are some members here that don't feed premixed and can give you a lot of tips. There's a huge thread right now in this section about feeding raw. I suggest reading it and PMing some of those members and of course do a lot of research on your own. There are some great links in that thread as well that can help you with the research. I definitely suggest going raw!

I'd love to just hand them lumps of meat to eat and know theyre getting something truly good for them but Im just so gosh darn scared I'll hurt them. My family already thinks Im the crazy dog lady! I'm going to do research till New Years,by then I hope I'll have a plan.

LOL....no it's not just lumps of meat. It has to be balanced also. The premade raw contains small bits of bone for calcium and fruits & veggies also for your other vitamin needs.

is raw supposed to be healthier? What if I cannot leave the food out too long? andcan someone please tell me what is "pre-made"

It's a matter of opinion on health I think it's def. healthier!

Barfworld also has alot of info on feeding raw.

The only 2 mine will eat is NV & Stella & Chewy's they didn't like the others.

I just switched Chloe from Caniade kibble to NV RAW too! She loves it! So far, I really think RAW is a better diet for Chloe. So, I would say..YES...GO RAW! But of course..do some research first before you decide you want to swtich your baby to RAW diet.

Its natural to feel nervous, but as long as you give the basics i.e different raw meaty bones, muscle meats and organ meats, you won't miss anything.

Sure, I give my guys unusual stuff when I can source it but their basic diet consists chicken, lamb, turkey and beef because thats what I can get. Unfortuatly most vets do not know anything at all about raw, lots have never even heard of it, they are being paid to promote certain foods, usually hills science diet, which we all know is terrible. Raw is very good for them! Just make sure you do your research first and buy a book so you know you are doing it right. Ian Billinghurst's is the one I have it's called The BARF Diet, but there are many out there. You will also notice much nicer teeth on raw. Because of other issues I am not feeding raw right now, but I highly recommend it. My dogs loved it and did very well on it.

I started raw about a month ago and my guys are LOVING it and doing fantastic! I feed NV's pre-made medallions (Wylie gets 3 per day, Marcel 2 per day). I may feed prey model eventually, but this was/is a great way for me to start the raw (gives me time to educate myself on the prey model).

I have 2 yorkies and now a doberman. Hubby feeds the doberman raw and I was not sure about all that. At first he got the runs and now doing great we now give him vitiams and veg and fruit with it. If you feed all raw you have feed some organ about once a week . his hair is so shinny. I cant seem to do this with my little guys. They eat the bone and all with the raw because if they dont it not balance. hope this helps
