correcting periodontal disease Our Yorkie has been diagnosed with stage II periodontal disease but after reading about the treatment we're hesitant to proceed. Wondering if anyone has a 'home remedy' that we could try? Not sure what caused it, she's always only had dry food. Someone suggested that it was from the hair around her mouth so we started having that trimmed shorter. |
I believe that this may be genetic - but also from lack of brushing teeth and having yearly (or even 6 mon.) professional teeth cleanings. Hard food and Good Clean Teeth is just a Myth. It's like saying if We Humans ate only Crackers than our teeth would be perfect ;) I brush teeth and also use a product called PetzLife. Best of Luck! |
Pixie has peridontal disease too and only ate kibble when I got her at 13 months. I have been using the Petzlife and it helps a little. Can I ask what the vet said the treatment would be. I need to take Pixie in to discuss. |
It's my understanding that many small breed dogs are prone to periodontal disease, that it's genetic. Eating kibble to prevent it is a myth. Regular cleanings to remove the plaque below the gum line is important. Brushing with Petzlife really helps, too. I also give Lady a CET chew twice a week per my vet. |
Welcome to YorkieTalk:) Could I ask why you are having second thoughts about the procedure? What are you seeing that makes you not want to do it? My Yorkie, Ellie has stage 3-4 periodontal disease. She was diagnosed about 11 months ago at five-years-old. She had always eaten mostly kibble and a little bit of canned food. She chewed somewhat but not a lot. One of her front teeth fell out and some others were wiggly. We took her in and they said she needed surgery. She had 9 teeth pulled and a cleaning. I promise it was not a big deal. I was so worried about the anesthesia but she did fine. She had to eat mushy kibble for a week but it wasn't a big deal. In fact, she got spayed a month ago and the teeth cleaning was a breeze compared to the spay. The main concern about not fixing the teeth is that your dog's mouth is probably infected which can go into the heart, liver and kidneys and cause damage if it isn't taken care of. If you have any questions about the surgery, costs or recovery I would be happy to answer them for you. |
Hi Crystal, My Milo is going in for his first cleaning this week might I ask what you feed Ellie now, my vet wants him to switch to prescription dental food I am not sure I am wanting to do that. Your help will be appreciated Cheryl |

Brushing teeth as often as possible and use the product PetZlife (oral care) |
teeth Good dental health contributes to the longivity of our Yorkies. They are prone to heart and kidney problems as they age due to bacteria from bad gums and teeth,,I would have them professionally cleaned if they need it..then brush daily to prevent problems...you can use a mouth wash to prevent tartar and disease. Best of luck to you. |
