Allergies? Maddie used to have very dry skin...so I've been switching her food around (the food she was originally on was RC Yorkie). She's now on a blend of Merrick, Canidae, and Innova, with some chicken broth or gravy or a couple tablespoons of Merrick canned mixed in once a day (this also has Missing Link in it)...and just plain dry of the three in the evening. Her skin has improved some...although it's still dry...and I noticed she scratches quite a bit and sneezes a lot. She seems very healthy, no other issues...and I use a gentle shampoo with oatmeal that I wash her in every other week (unless she's really dirty). Could it be possible that she has allergies? Do they make allergy medicine for dogs? Has anyone had experience with this? |
We were just at the vet's yesterday because of the scratching. I also couldn't see any dry skin or fleas, and he said no mites or mange. Vet said it was probably caused by the weather and turning on the heat in the house which stirs up some dust (even though the system is filtered) He asked how often I bathe her and I told him every week to 1 1/2 weeks. He told me to bathe her every 3 to 4 weeks gave me a bottle of ResiCort which is a hydrocortisone lotion you massage on after misting with water and Chlorpheniramine tablets. If this doesn't take care of it he will move on to more test and steroids. He said one of the dangers of them scratching is breaking the skin and getting a staph infection. The scratching also thins their hair |
I just posted this in another thread, but you could try a Neem Oil shampoo, I got mine at the health food store, it left their hair incredibly soft.... http://www.organixsouth.com/downloads/Pet_brochure.pdf |
She doesn't have fleas, mites, or mange either. Do you have to get the ResiCort and Chloropheniramine tablets at the vet? Should I go ahead and take her in? It's not terrible or anything...just enough to bother her I guess... Quote:

Layla has the same things. I asked my vet about it and she said to give her Baby liquid Benedryl (which i already was, 1 ml and she is 6 lbs) and if things get worse then we'll discuss what else she can go on. Good luck.. nothing worse than seeing our babies uncomfortable |

My little Zach has allergies and scratches like crazy until he gets some steroids in him. He seems to have an odor when the itching gets so bad. His hair has thinned on his back leg where he has scratched so much..... |
