Is it possible for a yorkie to eat too much??? Hootie and Hobbs have been on Natural Balance but I wanted to switch them to Orijen and it came in the mail today. I mixed some with their old food but of course they picked the new food out and left the old. Anyway, Hobbs chowed down on the new food! He ate SO MUCH! His tummy is very very full!!!! Is this dangerous??? |
yes it can be dangerous. Even small dogs can get bloat which is caused by eating a lot and eating quickly. I know they get excited with new food sometimes. If they tend to gobble it up i like to place something in their dish to get them to eat slower, OR i take the food and put it in a cookie tray all spread out, OR spread it out on the kitchen floor (if you don't mind the mess), OR put it in a treat toy which drops the food out. This way they don't gobble the food and tons of air at the same time. |
I agree with Kalina...bloat in extreme cases can cause the stomach to twist on it's axis which can be lethal. It blocks inflow and outflow to the stomach and can cut off major arteries and veins going to the stomach |
well what should I do? he seems perfectly content but his stomach is so full!!!!! At what point should I worry?? |

everytime lexi eats, her tummy blows up, but then it goes away after awhile.. |
how is hobbs today? |
Hey Everyone! After Hobbs' tummy was STILL full at 10pm last night, I called the emergency vet. They said that as long as Hobbs took a dump by morning, then he would be fine. If he had not taken a dump by morning, they said for me to take him to my regular vet. Well, luckily Hobbs woke me up at 3:30 this morning to go potty outside. He has been acting perfectly fine. But the yorkies are so obsessed with this new food (obsessed like I've never seen before!) that I'm having to schedule feed them for the first time ever!!!!!! I'm delighted actually! |
glad to hear he pooped and is feeling better. |
