My puppy's breathing
 
Princess is my first puppy. I was walking her on a leash for about one week. We took her into the city and I bumped into two other yorkie owners who were shocked she was on a leash. They told me how important it was to get her a harness and explained about how her trachea can collapse. I ran out and bought her a harness. I tugged her a little on the leash the previous week b/c I had no idea it could harm her. If it was hurting her wouldn't she make some noise or yap. Can everyone hear their yorkies when they are breathing? When I hear her breath it is very light and she doesn't seem to be gasping for breathe or anything. I know this sounds ridiculous, but I have never had a puppy before. Knowing that I have been walking her on a leash for a week has me worried sick! i just want my baby to grow into a strong healthy dog. Thanks everyone and sorry this is so long!

I walk my puppy on a leash, when she gets lazy and does not want to walk I just pick her up and carry her. I never had a problem with her not breathing properly.

Never put a collar on a yorkie. Collapsing trachea problems are a risk with this breed. Buy a good quality, comfortable harness. The ladies were correct. ;) If you had harmed her trachea, you more than likely would have heard a cough. Consider yourself lucky that you were warned. She may never have had any problem anyway, but it is always better to be safe than sorry. Also, when you have her spayed, if you do, be certain you request the veterinarian to intubate her herself with the smallest tube and not allow a technician do it. That is simply being careful, not paranoid. :)

Be sure you take the harness off at home, too. I think your puppy is fine. You do have to be pretty careful with Yorkies, they are small and a lot more delicate than a bigger dog. You should probably get a book about them.

Better safe than sorry! I'll be running out to buy my yorkies harness's as well. I have read enough to know that yorkies have very sensitive trachea's. ,and it only makes sense that if your pulling on or your yorkie leash or your yorkie pulling away from the leash they can easily bruise there trachea. Thanks for sharing this with us and making as aware of this issue. :yorkiesar

:) If she's not coughing or acting like she's in distress, she's probaly ok.
