diarrhea/peeing alot beagan just has had his first ever diarrhea (which stunk really bad) and he's drinking and peeing ALOT! like every 15-20 minutes. i home cook for him and today he had: scrambled eggs mixed with goats milk and nutrical and 1/8tsp crushed powdered eggshell (untill my order of missing link comes in)-- breakfast sweet potato with goat cheese and steamed green beans -- lunch organic rice with steamed peas and corn with some softened natural balance potato and duck added -- dinner he ALWAYS eats kibbles 3 or so hours after dinner-- the natural balance potato and duck HE LOVES! could drinking alot and peeing alot be a sign of liver shunt? i just fed him some plain yogurt to see if this helps? any suggestions? |
Yes, it can be a sign of a shunt but I HIGHLY doubt that is the problem if this is the first of it and he doesn't have other symptoms. Dogs with LS do get UTIs and stones. It sounds like a urinary tract infection (don't know about the diarrhea though) and he should see a vet as soon as possible. He would just need antibiotics if that was the case. If it is a UTI and it keeps coming back I would be concerned about a shunt. I believe all Yorkies should be tested anyway though. |
how do they test for shunt? should i take a sample of his urine to the vet? it's a brilliant yellow but i have been told it's because of his vitamins |
If you want to test for shunt it is two blood tests. You fast your dog overnight and they draw blood in the morning. The dog eats and the blood is drawn two hours later. Different vets prefer different methods for urine collection. Some let you bring it in and some don't. If they don't let you bring a sample (these are contaminated quite often) they will take it via catheter or cystocentesis (needle through the body wall into the bladder and no it doesn't hurt too bad). |

It's better (in my opinon) to let the vet take a urine sample rather than try to collect it yourself due to the possibility of contamination. A bile acid test is simple too, and in my opinion, important for yorkies to have done. |
It could be the dairy products you're giving him (goats milk and cheese). Dogs are lactose intolerant and can't always handle dairy. Some dogs do fine with it, some can only have small amounts, and some can't have any at all. Goats milk does have less lactose than cows milk, but the lactose could be causing the diarrhea |
this morning is the first time he has ever had goat cheese but every morning i mix his eggs with goats milk and has never had a problem. cheese usually encourages him to eat the whole egg because usually he will find something better to do. i have been using shredded chedder but its sooooo fattening and i can't find an organic cheese at meijer or walmart so i figured that goat cheese was close enough. yogurt is a dairy product too. how comes it helps diarrhea? |
