Skinny Yorkie My granddaughter's Yorkie, Sammy, is 10 months old now. She is finally calming down some and not biting much. She is much nicer to be around! She is very sweet and loves attention and affection. She weighs about 5.5 or 6 pounds. I think she is too thin. You can feel her ribs and backbone and hip bones. Her coat is thin and very short near her rear end. She has been to the vet and had all of her shots, etc., and is active and eats very well. Is it natural for a puppy to be thin at 10 months? I think she should have more "puppy fat" at that age. She eats Science Diet food and always has access to her bowl of food. She loves the Wysong food my dogs eat and doesn't get an upset tummy when she's here and eats it. I have never had a puppy that was "skinny" at 10 months. I wondered if she's just going through a tall and skinny period that's natural for growing Yorkies or if she needs to be checked for some problem. |

I think it's normal. Sometimes they go thru that phase. At one point Teddy was really skinny and long, now he filled out more but is still thin. Sophie also got longer and thinned out and lost the baby fat. As long as he eats enough i think it's okay. It could be cause he is very active. |
It is hard to say because you should be able to feel her ribs. You shouldn't be able to see them. What did the vet say? They can tell you if she is too skinny. It is probably all of her energy. Anyway, my Yorkie used to eat Science Diet and it made the fur by her butt/lower back very rough. It also made her throw up for no reason. I would suggest that the food is switched just because SD is not really good. |

Mine was both skinny at that age. They just exercise so much. |
My Ricky is like that, he is so skinny you can count his ribs and see his backbone. But, he eats like an elephant and the Vet says he is very healthy. His breeder says some dogs are like some people, no matter what they eat they remain skinny. As long as he is eating, and is active, and you've had him checked by the Vet, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about, but, at the first sign of something wrong, I would make sure to see the doctor, these dogs don't have enough fat to sustain an illness. |
Lacey is 10 months and really skinny right now, she lost alot of weight when she went into heat. |

Maddie went through this phase...she was very skinny (and still is really) from 6 months on. She has never been a big eater though...and FULL of energy...so she just burns off the calories. My vet told me that scheduled feedings actually help them to GAIN weight....instead of just free feeding (leaving it out all the time). That's because the more active pups tend to run by every once in awhile to grab a bite and then keep playing (just eating a little at a time) and that causes them to burn everything off. But if you feed them a "meal" at breakfast, lunch, and dinner they eat more at a time. Just like when humans need to lose weight they are told to eat several small meals instead of a few big ones. Also, I agree about the Science Diet...it's a horrible food. I suggest Innova because that's the only dry food Maddie, my pickiest eater, will take. If you put that stuff in front of her she'll gobble up the whole bowl! :D And of course, with Maddie, I sneak her extra treats and give her canned food every other day to try and fatten her up. She FINALLY has a little belly after struggling with her from the time she was 7 weeks old! |
boston I have a boston terrier that has an extremly high metabolism... she can eat and eat w/ most foods and look like we are starving her... we finally found a food that works to keep weight on her... Premium Edge... but we have to order online because the closest dealer is like 3hrs away! |
Turbo is the same way. I think he is too thin. I can't give him canned food cuz he gets bad poopies. I give him nutrical, and a quality food. He is still thin. I know he eats allllllll day, a little at a time. He gets treats as a supplement to his kibble. No luck. When I am back in cali... I am tempted to drop him off w/my grandma for a few weeks. Her dogs never seem to lack in the fluffy dept. hahha. |
I'm sure it's normal, but I haven't experienced a skinny Yorkie. Kalina is a fatty-fatty-boombalatti. |
Toby is very thin, I and been trying to plump him up but no luck :( He looks healthy and long but thin. I\'m just used to 5-6 pounders :p |
