Riley had vaccines now has head droop My 3 year old Yorkie had her vaccines 4 days ago. She started with a fever. She then developed a head droop to the right. Now she cannot even stand up without falling over. She also has a history of a liver shunt when she was a tiny baby. The vet did x-rays and labs today and everything is normal, including her liver. He also found what looks like a toe ring on the x-ray. Who knows when she swallowed that. She does not have a history of swallowing things. The ring is not toxic so that seems to be the least of our worries. The vet contacted a neurologist who suggested she be sent home with antibiotics and a muscle relaxer. She is to go to the vet again tomorrow to see if the foreign object has moved. I am so afraid that my baby has had a stroke or something even worse than that. Can anyone help me? Has anyone ever had this experience before? Thank you all so much. DianeB |
OH NO!!! THAT IS AWFUL!!! Please keep us updated on her progress. :( |
I am so sorry. Could the muscle relaxer be causing her not to be able to stand up without falling over? Please keep us posted. ~Bella, General Patton, & Maria~ |
Riley had vaccines now has head droop The muscle relaxer was given after she already had developed the head droop, so that would not be the culprit. My daughter mentioned meningitis. I wonder if this should be looked into. Thanks for your response. DianeB |
This is terrible. Is she at least eating? Is she alert or really lethargic? |
I am so sorry to hear that your baby is not feeling well. Maybe somebody here has gone through this problem before. I hope she gets better soon! |
Oh I am so sorry to hear about Riley. Please keep us posted as to more info you hear from your vet and the neurologist. I know how you must be worried with a heavy heart but remember we are all here for you and Riley. :aimeeyork Schatzie sends puppy hugs and thoughts!!! :aimeeyork |
Oh Diane- I am soo sorry to hear about Riley! I can't offer any experience with this, but I promise I will be praying for both of you! |
Was that an animal neuro that your vet contacted? Are there any tests that they could do to check for a stroke? |
Please let us know what is happeneing ....she is in my prayers!!! |
Riley Update Thanks to all of you for your support. It is a vet neurologist that was contacted by my vet. I am going to ask my vet to look into meningitis since I read on some websites that that is a problem in Yorkies with a congenital liver shunt. I am also fearing either a stroke or some kind of a tumor. I will keep you all posted. Thank you so much again. DianeB |
me and scrappy will be praying for your baby and your family do keep us posted on the results . |
I've never had anything like that happen. I haven't heard of it, either. We'll all be praying for your baby and hoping that in a few days time you'll tell us everything is fine again. Please keep us posted. |
I found this, so perhaps it is just a reaction to the vaccine and everything will be fine. At least, I hope so. I know you said it was four days ago, but some of these babies are so small that time may not mean that much. What about vaccine reactions? It is true that some animals have a systemic reaction, including a low-grade fever or muscle aches and pain. This reaction is more common in young and toy breed dogs and causes them to eat less and sleep more for 24-48 hours. Rarely, dogs will have a more severe reaction, characterized by hives, swelling of the face, or even vomiting. This reaction is easily prevented by giving antihistamine at the time of subsequent vaccinations. Leptospirosis, the component most likely to produce such strong reactions, can be left out of some vaccines. If your dog has had a vaccine reaction in the past, don't skip future vaccinations but do warn the veterinarian so he can take steps to prevent a recurrence. http://www.canismajor.com/dog/vaccine.html |
Oh for heavens sake I hope she gets better soon! Could it be related to the vaccines somehow? Sounds like she had a neurological reaction. Please let us know what the vet finds out. Keeping Riley in my prayers... |
