RAW and VOMITING!!! HELP!! I just gave Abby a NV Beef Medallion and she ate fine with no problem. then 5 minutes later she throws up!! Then after 10 minutes she throws up again!! I am freaking out. She is acting completely normal and is barking at me to play. She drank some apple pedialyte that I gave her immediatley following the 2nd throw up. I really did not expect this to happen! The most I thought would happen was diaherra. What do i do now? Should I feed her a medallion tomorrow morning? This is really freaking ne out and nnow she vomited again i am waiting for the vet to return my call |
Some dogs can't handle beef very well. I'm thinking it just didn't sit right with her, especially since she vomited so fast. There wasn't any time for bacteria in the raw to make her sick. I'd take the beef back and try chicken at first. It's supposed to be the easiest meat to start them off with - then once they are doing well with that, you can add "richer" meats. another problem could have been that she ate it too fast. I know a lot of dogs gobble their raw very quickly, especially at first. If she ate it too fast, that might have made her throw up. That can happen when any type of food is gobbled too fast I'm sure she'll be fine |
Well I spoke to the Vet. He said not to feed water/ pedialyte or food for 1 hour. if she continues to vomit I have to bring her into the office. She really didnt gobble it took quickly. somewhat but not quickly. i have given her chicken in the past and she vomits when i do. thats why i tried beef first. OMG, I am so scared and freaking out now! Please reassure me. |
I have heard that it is not good to feed kibble and raw in the same day....has she had anything other than raw today? I think grains and raw digest differently and you don't want to mix them. probably once she has nothing in her stomach other than raw she will be ok....and I agree with lacy's mom, chicken would be better to begin with. |
Some of these little dogs stomaches can't handle food like bigger dogs..Just like my sons yorkie(he's 15 weeks and 2.4 lbs), he gets diarrhea or throws up just eating a little piece of a dog treat... |

She is doing WAY better Hey Guys, Just an update, she is doing 100% better. I was a complete mess when I saw her throwing up like that. I felt so scared and bad. Cause she would vomit nd then start shaking and give me those sad eyes. I gave her her regular food this morning and she ate it all with no problems. As I mentioned before, I have given her chicken and the 2 times I did it, she threw up. So, if I started her on raw chicken NV medallions, wouldnt she do the same thing? That's why i started her on NV beef. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for all your comments and concerns, Rebecca |
Thats a pretty violent reaction, sounds like you have a sensitive little girl. It could have been just a reaction to the new food or beef is very rich and can be fatty so its not the best thing to start with. I don't feed premade but would suggest trying perhaps the lamb if she doesn't do well on chicken, but don't give her a whole medallion this time, give her maybe a quarter and see how she does. Sensitive dogs generally need to be introduced to raw a little slower than others. There will be a type of raw that suits her, its just trial and error. Of course in my opinion its possibly a little harder with premade raw because for all we know she could have been having a reaction to one of the veggies that is in there, or the egg, whereas with doing it yourself you can introduce each food on its absolute own which makes it easier to pinpoint when they have a problem to a particular food. |
i agree with myfairlacy and lara. Also be sure to not give her raw on the same day you've fed her kibble. If she's this sensitive its best to wait till the next day to start a new diet. So since you've fed her the kibble today i'd wait till tomorrow to try again. And maybe try the lamb, that's what i started morgan on and she did just fine. Morgan gobbles everything up within a minute so make sure you break up the medallion into small pieces and only give her a few of the pieces to start off with and then see how she does. good luck |
Was it still cold? Sometimes if the food is too cold it will upset their stomach and come right back up again. Try adding a little hot water to it just to take the cold edge off. (Don't put it in the microwave, you can't cook it because of the bone).... Course then she'll need to eat it all right away. Letting room temp raw sit around isn't a good thing. |
The food was semi-cold. I took out one medallion and put in the ziploc bag and put in the fridge for about an hour. Then it was her feeding time and I put the little baggie in warm water to warm it up a lil. and i took it out and cut it into 6 pieces. it was all mushy. She ate it no problem, and then all the drama happened. ill see if i feed her lamb medallions. i dunno if i should just give up. |
I could have so easily given up when I started, but if I had then my dogs would not have benefited the way they have. You can't really judge how she would be on raw from one feeding. Honestly, it could have been as simple as her vomiting because she had eaten too fast or because it was too cold or simply because it was a new food. Next time, properly defrost it, for a good few hours, for example take her breakfast out the night before and her dinner out in the morning etc. Feed her 1 quarter of a room temperature one, see how she does. As I said earlier, we don't even know that it was the meat or the fact that it was raw, could have been one of the vegetables. This is one of the problems with premade raw and why I do it myself instead, its too complicated as you are feeding so many ingredients at the same time. |
Glad she's doing better. Don't give up. It's only been a day. Some dogs have a sensitive stomach and will take longer to adjust to a new diet. Just give it some time |
Maybe you could just give her a little bit at first instead of the whole medallion. I asked my vet about feeding NV raw and kibble in the same day and she said she didn't think there was any problem with that. I asked about them disgesting at different rates and she said it would be fine. Sometimes my dogs eat raw for one meal and kibble for the other in the same day. We've never had a problem in over a year and a half. |
