Genetic Defect Update Just wanted to let people know the outcome with the breeder of my beautiful girl who had the litter of 3 puppies with the genetic disease of hypotrichosis. (Sorry, I just can't figure out how to post pictures. If I could find someone who knew how, I'd gladly pay for a class!) All the puppies are growing and such a joy to watch. Although the male pups are "unique" looking to say the least, they seem to have escaped with only the bald part of the disease. Their general health is fine and they are such loving, affectionate little guys already! After many "discussions" with our breeder, my husband and I finally decided that if legal action was necessary, we were going to go ahead. Not for any money, because that wouldn't change what happened, but to make sure they did not breed/sell any more puppies from their dam that is the carrier of the disease. I also contacted the Dept of Agriculture in PA who licenses breeders and the ACA where they register their dogs. Once they saw we were serious about a law suit, we have agreed upon: full refund of the purchase price for Joy of $1,272.00, they have shown us the vet bill where the dam was spayed and they gave us copies of the letters sent to all other purchasers of the puppies from that dam telling them of the defect and advising them not to breed. In all fairness to them, I think that is the best they could be expected to do. Although none of this changes the fact we are now responsible for 5 dogs, at least I can be reasonably sure no one else who purchased dogs from that breeder within Joy's line will go through the heartbreak we have. I've gotten lots of messages and good wishes regarding this and I thank each and every one of you! |
good job Wow... good job. I don't know the disease of the story... you took a whole litter? But the action you took is great. My husband is a lawyer and I think even he would applaud the great settlement! |
Congratualtions, your persistants and dedication is what is needed more of. Your actions will hopefully inspire more people to not let breeders take advantage of them. |
Thanks for the update. I'm glad you followed through. |
So you're keeping all the babies? That sounds wonderful! Its also great that everything went well with the breeder. :D |
If you need help with pictures I could try to help -- someone else here had to teach me :) PM if you like It is so great to hear when someone follows thru results can occur to stop a poor breeding program. Glad your state was responsive. |
I'm glad everything is settled now...but, don't feel bad, we have 6 dogs..5 of ours, 1 is sons...2 outside, 4 inside, but, hey, the more the merrier..:) |
Sluggo :animal-pa Hello Ples! Just wanted to let everyone know that my husband and I have adopted one of these unique little guys. In mid-December we brought Sluggo home. (Formerly known as Dobby, my husband thought he needed a tougher name.) He has visited our vet twice and is a healthy 3.46 pound baby boy. He has the sweetest personality and everyone that meets him falls in love with him. He gets along great with all the members of our family - 3 dogs, 4 cats, a rabbit, and 5 grandsons! He has sweaters and a jacket to keep his little body warm and loves to snuggle in bed at night. Thank you Clarence and Ples for giving us the opportunity to add this little guy to our family. He's brought such joy to all of us and we are looking forward to spending many, many years with our new baby. :hearts-en |
Congratulations on your determination to turn something bad into a positive. I hope you can find a way to post pictures because I would love to see those special little ones. They are so blessed that you have them. You and your husband are very special people. |
What wonderful people you are. I would love to see pictures of these little one's grow :) |
