grain vs no-grain pet food I am interested in hearing comments on this subject. Would like to know if feeding a no-grain diet would be beneficial to a 6 yr old male Yorkie who has a UTI and struviate crystals. jad |
I don't know if a grainless diet would be beneficial for those kind of crystals but someone else might. I do know some here like to feed grainless to their dogs because it is believed that dogs have a hard time digesting it and it is useless to them. I, however, do feed grains and probably always will. I don't like to make the liver and kidneys process all that protein (because that is usually what grain is replaced with) but that doesn't mean I'm right. |
Grain vs Grainless I really appreciate your comments. The reason you gave for feeding grainless was so very helpful to me. I am going to go along with you and feed a high quality commercial food and would like to know what you might suggest for two male yorkies, age 6. One of these had a UTI/struviate crystals and is currently eating ( picking at) Royal Canin Urinary SO that the vet recommended he eat to clear up this problem. I want to take him off of this in just a few days when he finishes the antibotic (Baytril 22.7 m.....one half tablet daily. I would like to put both my babies on the same dry food. What should the protein level be? Is a fiber level of about 4% OK. Looking forward to a reply from you, jad |
I really don't have any experience with bladder stones/crystals. I know that Yorkieluv has dealt with stones and knows a lot about it. Maybe you can try and PM her. If you are just looking for any good quality commercial food for a healthy dog I know most people like Canidae, Innova, Life's Abundance, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Wellness... I personally homecook for Ellie. I got the recipe from a nutritionist and it was tailored to Ellie's physical needs. |
Grain vs Grainless Thanks so much for your prompt reply. I would like to post a message to Yorkieluv, but I don't know how to post a private message. Would you be willing to tell me? jad |
I have no exp in this area... but hopefully someone with post some answers for ya' :) |
You just go to Private Messages at the top right of the screen you are looking at now. Then you click on Send New Message on the left side of the screen. Then you type Yorkieluv into the recipient space. I'm sure there are others that will know also. Maybe you could just start a new thread in the health and diet section and name it something different like "bladder crystal diet question" or something. Then more people may answer. |
