Double row of teeth? Hi everyone.. my little guy who just had his neuter surgery-now has at least 2 teeth coming in, on the inside of the baby teeth. The baby teeth are very solid, and I am afraid that I am going to have to have surgery again! But.. do I have some time? Like a month or so? I just wonder what will happen if its not done right away? Any one having had this experince, I would like to know what you did. They are coming in next to the "eye" teeth ( don't know the correct name). He looks like a shark right now! |
It's actually more common than you think. My friend had her yorkie's baby I teeth pulled and it cost her a bundle. My Gracie had extra teeth and they eventually fell out on their own around 13 months old. If you are really concerned about it, contact your vet. You have to be careful because food can get stuck between their teeth and can cause decay and other problems. |
im having the same problem with mine. my puppy is 8 months today and my vet told me if the baby teeth dont come out she will have to have surgery. and im worried about that :( |
Buddha had his neutering procedure yesterday and the vet decided to refer him to a canine dental specialist because he has retained all of his deciduous teeth and they are crowding his adult teeth so he has to have surgery again whcih i was really trying to avoid. My daughter does a good job of cleaning his teeth on a regular basis and he only eats dry kibble but he is 9 months old now so we wil probably go ahead and have a consultation and schedule the extractions soon. |
Thanks eveyone.. I guess **sigh** I am looking at more surgery. I will call my vet tomorrow.. |
How old is your puppy? They are usually removed with the neuter around 6 months of age. If your puppy is not 6 months yet, then you probably have time to let them come out on their own. If he is over 6 months, I would not wait to long, as food will get caught between the teeth and it will start to stink and the bite could be messed up. In the meantime, give him lots of chew toys and teething treats that will help loosen the teeth and help them fall out. It can be expensive to have them extracted (my vet charges $25 per tooth) so the more you can do to loosen them, the better! |

Too Many Teeth Hello! Were the new teeth in when the little guy had his surgery? If so I am surprised the vet did not take them then- unless of course he was too young and more were still going to have the chance of coming in and crowding. TXshopper is right, this is quite common so don't feel bad. I had the problem w/ a girl I used to have. My vet told me it would be about 100.00 to pull them all, and let me tell you she had a complete set of extra teeth- not just a few. It looked really freaky. As far as what the others have said about loosening them yourself, I would try it if I were you. I was told before to just work on the teeth each day until the dog lets you know that he has had enough. You don't have to do anything rough, just a little pushing and pulling (like you would with a child's loose tooth). The tooth would probably eventually loosen on it's own, but you can help to speed up the process. It does not have to be painful to your dog as long as you are gentle and know when he is sick of it. You might save your dog an unneeded surgery and yourself some money. Anytime you don't have to put a loved one under is a good time! Who knows, maybe his I teeth will be the only ones that do this. However, if you end up w/ monster mouth like my little girl- surgery would be the way to go. :D |
My vet never said there were teeth that needed to come out.. he was exactly six months old (2 weeks ago) when he was neutered. I think because he had a hernia surgery at the same time.,they felt it was too much for him. I try to play some tug of war, and I will try your idea of working on the teeth. Its a little unnerving to see these extra teeth! I really do not want him to have to go thru surgery again!! |
Pulling Teeth Hi, My Dudley had 9 baby teeth pulled at 6 months because his baby teeth would not come out on their own. Because my Vet did that his permanent teeth came in perfect. Our 6 month old, Dinkey, was just neutered and the Vet pulled three of his baby teeth (while he was under) that were crowding the permanent teeth. One of his front permanent teeth was coming in behind his baby tooth that just wouldn't come on out...........I think it's a good thing to have the baby teeth removed when they are crowding the permanent teeth. GOOD LUCK! SandyTXn, Dudley and Dinkey |
Mine is 9 month's old, double rows of teeth. After reading all the posts on this I believe I will wait till after a year old to see what I am going to do. |
Our vet delayed Toto's spay until she was eight months so that all her permanent teeth were in because she didn't want to put her under twice. She was concerned that if she waited longer that her permanent teeth wouldn't be straight. Delaying the spay beyond six months was OK because it's a little different when they are tiny. The teeth are perfect! |
When I took Gus to get neutered he also had 2 rows of bottom teeth. I asked the vet about it and she pulled them that very day of his neutering surgery. A few months after his eye teeth came in. We were playing a game of tug of war and one one baby tooth fell off. He still has 2 eye teeth on the botton right side. At his next appointment (in a week) he goes for his last post op, I am giong to have his teeth cleaned and see what they can about the one baby tooth still in there. His top teeth all fell out and came in normal. We also called Gus a shark. I guess this happen more often than I had thought. |
Yikes! I just noticed this week that Pixie has a double row of teeth up top! I didn't realize how common this was. I am worried sick though because my vet said we should put off getting her spayed until she gets a bit older in hopes she will put on more weight. Then he MAY feel comfortable risking the surgery. But she is so little (1 pound 7ounces) what if she is never able to have the surgery?? As long as I keep her teeth clean, will having a second row cause any problems???? |
How old is Pixie? That will tell us if you still have hope of her getting any bigger. I had the same problem that you are having, and guess what my little girl's name was...PIXIE! How weird. Anyway- I recently sold her and she is 9 months old weighing 3.9 lbs. I took her in for a complete vet check before I sold her and I asked about her teeth. My vet told me the same thing about waiting until she was spayed to have her teeth done. With her size being so small, she did not need to go under more than necessary. I don't know why she would have any problems w/ her double row of teeth if you kept them clean. However, I would wait to see if any of the more experienced people answer this thread. They will probably have better kowledge of this subject. |
Pixie will be seven months old tomorrow. I haven't weighed her in about a month. Right now we aren't giving up hope that she will grow more because she wasn't eating well before. But a breeder has been giving us advice, and we switched Pixie's diet to higher protein foods. She is doing much better now, very playful and active, so I don't want to do any unneccesary surgery. It wouldn't be worth loosing her. Has anyone else left the baby teeth in? Did they have problems down the road? |
YOU CANNOT LEAVE BABY TEETH IN!!! That is unless a qualified canine dentist tells you that you should. I have been having loads of problems with my baby Bruce's teeth...In fact he is going to be getting braces even sometime within the next 3 months. Remaining baby teeth is just one problem we currently have and yes I will be having them surgically removed when the orthodontic devices are placed on his teeth...Yes it seems like unneccessary pain, but our vet and 2 canine dentists have told me it is neccessary to avoid more serious problems such as malocusion (bite troubles), serious wry bite (with this they can and often lose ability to eat on their own), and even worse abcess and infection that could cause blood disease/sepsis. Seek the advice of not just your vet but one that specializes in dentistry before making any decisions. I do not mean to seem like I am lecturing but I know you love your baby and want the best for her! |
Well, I have talked with my breeder and got the names of a few vets who specialize in small dogs. We saw one of them today and he seems a lot more comfortable with small dogs. He recomended that we give her another three months and then we will spay her and remove any baby teeth still in all at once. He said the permanents aren't all the way through yet so she is a bit of a late-bloomer, and we should give her a little more time to let the baby teeth fall out on their own. He was suprised the first vet didn't warn me to be on the look out for the double teeth! This vet made me feel much more comfortable. Plus-his wife has a yorkie! :D I told him he better give me good advice since I have all of my YT pros to consult with! Thanks for y'alls help! Pixie is my first yorkie, and there sure is a lot to learn! I'm glad I have you guys! :animal-sm |
