does anyone's yorkie throw up regularily? about once every 2 or 3 days Dexter will thow up. its not a lot and he doesnt act sick or in pain and will continue to play afterwards so im a little confused. I took him to the vet and let her know, but she didnt seem worried, but didnt give an explanation for it either, just said he was pefectly healthy. he's like a litle vaccuum and im assuming he just takes in a little too much dust, throws it up and continues on his way. i just wanted to see if any one else has experienced this? I'm vary warry of vets and am wondering if i should get a second opinion. im aware that they have different digestion than most dogs so just wanted to see if this is normal. am i worrying about nothing?? :( he acts very happy and healthy otherwise! :animal36 |
I have only had my yorkie for a few months now and sometimes he seems to do that. I also have a Boxer who seems to do it a lot more (a few times a month). Sometimes I think that they do it when there stomach is empty or if they are very excited. My Boxer use to do it in the mornings before he would eat. I usually do not feed my dogs until every human in the house has ate ( I am one of those pack leader dog person). What I do now is give them some liver treats packed into their bones while we eat and them feed them. I think that in my case my Boxer had an empty stomach. I feed my yorkie 3 meals a day and my boxer 3 small meals a day. I also think that sometimes fear, excitement, empty stomach, or pain can make them vomit. So you just have to look at your dog and try to see what he is doing before he vomits. Good Luck. |
It is not normal and I would not listen to that vet;) (unless of course the dog has an empty stomach). I can tell you that Ellie used to throw up every week or two for no reason and she was free fed, so she could eat whenever. I thought I was gving her a good food (Science Diet) but then we switched to Canidae and then homecookiing and she has only thrown up about three times in eight months:) and there is always a reason (doesn't feel good, car sick). |
It could be his food. I was feeding Nutro Lamb & Rice kibble and Basil would throw up every couple of days--it was yellow and foamy. I switched him to California Naturals Small Bites a couple of months ago and I don't remember the last time that he was sick! |

Usually it means she needs her anal glands cleaned out. Some dogs are more prone to need anals cleaned more then others. |
thanks for all the feedback! i never would have assosiated it with anal glands and i will look into that. he is eating Royal Canin puppy right now and i feed him twice a day but he never eats it all and most of the time he will have access to the food all day long so i dont think its an empty stomach. most of the time he will trow up a bit of white foam, but sometimes nothing even comes up. im going to keep a log of it to see if i can see any patterns. i had a pup with pancrease problems goiwing up and i mentioned that to the vet too, but she said that even though yorkies are prone to those problems, she didnt think that was it. he never shows any pain and i know my pup growing up always was streaching and in pain when her pancrease would act up. he hasent vomited in 2 days so i am going to keep an eye on him and if he does it again im going to take him to get a second opinion. i have yet to find a really good vet in toronto that i trust with my babies 100% :( |
Mine do from time to time. Id be concerned if it were that often. I would get another vets opinion |
Bailey does it if I don't give her a spoonful of wet food in the morning and in the evening.. So thats what I do for both girls.. |
You really have to watch your dog when they throw up regularly, talk to your vet and try to figure out why. My puppy used to throw up from time to time too, not a lot but maybe 3-4 times a month when he was a few months old. If I feed him late, he will throw up bile from hunger. If he jumps too much and is too excited in the morning, he will also throw up and he throws up in the car if the ride is more than 30 sometimes 40 minutes. He is a barfy boy as my hubby calls him especially in the car lol. Now that he is almost one and a half years old, he is not barfing as much anymore, actually can't even remember when was the last time :) . I make sure I give him some snack before tucking him in for the night so that he is not too hungry in the morning. Edited to add: You know your dog best so I am sure you'll be able to figure it out :) |
water My mom's maltese did that until she started using a water bottle instead of a bowl. |
Mine use to until I started giving her a teaspoon of cottage cheese before she goes to bed. |
i just realized that i never posted a follow up to this thread. Since i posted this, Dexter has not vomited at all! :) i did take him to another vet which i liked less than the first one :( but she also said that i should have nothing to worry about. i was all set to log when, where, why he was vomiting but thankfully he stopped! thanks to everyone for their input and ideas! Alana & Dexter :) |
Lillie only throws up if she has been in the car too long. 15 minutes is her max. |
my yorkie threw up a lot too and didn't seem sick, it was the food we were giving him and also everything he was eating outside he has a very delicate stomach we have to keep him on i/d prescription hills can wet food. :animal-pa:animal-pa:animal-pa:animal-pa |
throw up My puppy not only throws up, he gets diarrhea also, mostly after he ate what he is not supposed to (snail, earth warm, etc.). My friend's puppy ate them too but no problems. I figured that my puppy just has delicate digestive system. I started feeding him probiotics for dogs (bought from PetSmart). It's in a capsule and I just open it up and sprinkle on his food. It's tasteless and odorless. Anyway, his problems went away. In fact, his stool has been very healthy looking lately (great color and texture, and consistent too). |
Our little guy starting throwing up bile about 3 am every day. Our vet asked as how active he was at night. Since we work, he is very active, his excercise time is really from 5-10. The vet told us to try giving him a snack around 830, ( since dinner is around 4). The reason was a lot of activity a long time after eating would stir up the acids in his stomach. The VERY FIRST time we tired this the throwing up stopped. He has not thrown up once since we put him on the snack routine! |
Kiki has started throwing up in the middle of the night the past two nights. Yesterday Kiki threw up twice in the middle of the night. She has always had a sensitive tummy. I didn't think much about it until she threw up during the day yesterday. She still has been acting normal. Last night she got up during the night to potty and got half of a bacon little & a drink of water. It came right back up. I don't know what is going on. She eats science diet sensitive skin ( vet recommended) she was having a skin issues at the time. I haven't ever switched her off of it because it seemed her throwing up was better. |

She could also have a little tummy bug. |
Vomiting should not be ignored... I'd be doing bloodwork and looking for answers and solutions with foods and routines. If a dog has a sensitive tummy, store bought treats can be too rich for them to handle... |
She is almost 2. She is throwing up food. The 1st night she didn't wake anyone up. My husband felt her get up but didn't think anything about it. We haven't changed anything in her diet. What would be symptoms of reflux? All of her treats have been a long time finding out what she can eat and not get sick and all made in USA. I'm calling her vet this morning. |

Glad you're taking her to the vet, let us know what happens. |
I've never noticed her snoring. But licking and swallowing hard a few times. She also gets the hiccups a lot and I have wondered if it was reflux. Her vet wasn't in today and the only other guy in the office I will see was booked up so we go in the morning. My husband is coming home at lunch so I can go into work |
Huey's vomiting (unless car sick) is always related to a dietary reason. Changes in food, sub-optimal food, too many/too rich treats. We have exactly ONE kibble that he can eat without getting sick at intervals. |

Kiki is better blood work came back normal. She was actually doing better after my last post but we took her just to be safe. Her vet was still out so I had to see another one. Ugh! We are going Saturday for her kennel cough shot? So we will hopefully get to see Jill then. |

A- Nausea - Not uncommon with water if over drinking or slow empting time in the stomach. With food it could be the same reason with empting usually its the food. Especially if the vet checks and testing have been normal. A floating esophageal hernia will also cause regurgitation and throwing up. Also slow your dogs eating down give small portions multiple times a day and switch foods. If pup is gulping food air will build up and cause belching and throwing up. Although, there are many things that can cause this if pancreatitis has been diagnosed in your dog at any given time you can be assured it is the FOOD! Cook organic chicken and instant rice see if that helps. As far as anal glands they can get infected however, it would be constant and the symptoms would be a bit different. Unlikely Hope this helps. |
Tinky has had stomach issues her entire life even before her cancer diagnosis. Her vet seems to think she just has a sensitive belly. She is on prescription low fat food to help her tummy issues. |
Sick Puppy My Yorkie threw up yesterday afternoon and again last night...and it was probably everything he had eaten for the day. He also has gas and his tummy is rumbling, He acts like he feels OK, not quite as playful, but it's very hot here...98-100 degrees, so he's been laying around inside instead of running in and out. Also, he gets car sick! I can't take him anywhere. Is there something I can give him to settle his stomach? Pepto-Bismol? What about taking him in the car? Will little trips at a time help to get him used to it? |
