Purina Hello, Im thinking of getting the Purina Puppy Chow when I get my yorkie and was wondering if any one feeds this to there dog?And if it is a good food for them |
www.dogfoodanalysis.com is a great place to research dog foods. Purina is a lower quality food with lots of by-products. Take a look at the link and compare it to other foods like Innova, Canidae, Solid Gold, etc. |
Purina products are really not good at all. If you go to the this site: www.dogfoodanalysis.com look for 4 or 5 star foods for Yorkies. Six stars are the best but sometimes they are too rich or high in protein for Yorkies (especially since Yorkies are prone to liver problems). There are a couple with lower protein in the six star section (Innova for one I believe), so that would be good. Some foods that Yorkie owners here like are: Orijen (extremely high in protein) Innova Innova Evo Canidae (this seems to be the favorite) Merrick Life's Abundance Solid Gold Natural Balance' A few of these are All Life Stages and the ones that aren't should have a puppy formula. |
a general rule, anything dog food you can buy in the supermarket is not good |

I agree!!  |
I would NEVER buy food at a dog store anymore, its just not good for them. Mine are on Solid Gold, which there are many brands that are good for these babies. |
ok- so where do you get these 5 and 4 star dog foods? I live in a smaller town- about all we have here is Wal-mart! Think the vet sells Science Diet, but we have no pet stores, Wal- mart and 1 other grocery store! And I have heard Science Diet is not that great- but I have not really checked that out! |

thanks- surley we have a feed Store! |
I would recomend sticking with the food the pup is acustomed to eating to when you get it from the breeder. Make any change over to a new food a gradual transition. The pup will be thrown off as it is being in a new environment. Fact is, NO dog food is made with 'quality' ingredients by human standards. Search around for a food that you think works best for your new pup and make sure that you supplement the diet if need be to get any vital nutrients that the food itself may be lacking. Don't be fooled by the myth that the ingredients listed and the order they appear on the food is a good indication of the nutritional value of what's in the bag. |
