Hey Homecookers-Venison? Anyone ever feed deer meat to their dogs? A co worker of mine is going hunting, and he mentinoned this idea to me...has anyone ever bought fresh venison and used it in the homecooked recipes? If so, do you cook it first or feed it raw? Do you think the amounts to put in the recipes would be the same as beef/poultry/fish? Any other advice/thoughts? Thanks! |

hmm so venison is good for them? My DH is out hunting right now. We eat a LOT of venison throughout the year. there is so much you can do with it i.e. jerky, sticks, ground, streaks, canned etc. Even down to using it with the hamburger helper for the skin kids,lol!:D My skin kids prefer it over beef any day. He also rabbit hunts and I read rabbit is very good for them too. I personally won't eat rabbit myself but I would love to get Koda eating wild game since it's so available here at my house:) acowbyzcowgrl- how do you give it to your Yorkie? |
Venison is SO good for them! Very low on the allergenic scale too! Lucky pooches. You could feed raw - are you feeding raw now? Or, you could cook it and throw in w/ their kibble. |

Goat meat is about the same as venison and you dont have to go hunting!!LOL Its good for people too. Alot less fat and no added hormones/shots/etc. They need to be whethered young or like deer, the bucks get smelly as they mature which flavors the meat also. I never had venison as I dont hunt. A friend of mine gave me some ground elk once. I cooked it(probably wrong) and it tasted like rubber tires.?? |
Thanks for the advice, everyone! I think I will talk to my co-worker and see if he'll make a deal with me! (I could NEVER do the hunting, or the cleaning/processing of the meat-I'm a vegetarian! But, since he would take care of all that, I think it's a great idea!) |
I give it raw to the big dogs, and raw or cooked (ground) to the yorkie kids. They LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT! I think it has really helped with their allergies as well. We have a litter with food allergies...they have been on Innova EVO/raw cooked venison for almost a week now and their skin is clearing (almost completely) and the one little guy we had with a bald spot is growing his hair back...it was right on the top of his head. I'll be sure to post before/after pics. Kristie |
