Vegetable Digestion and Cooking Questions Okay, somebody please explain. What is better: steamed or boiled veggies? How do you pulverize vegetables? Just put them into a food processor raw? Which vegetables are supposed to be given raw and which ones cooked? When a recipe calls for squash, can I use butternut or spaghetti (instead of just yellow and zuccini)? The veggies Ellie gets in her meals now/will be getting are carrots, green beans, broccoli (in moderation), zuccini, yellow squash and bell peppers. Are there others that I could be using and am not thinking of? She doesn't do really well with spinach. I like to give her veggies that are hard to overdo (like carrots). |
I lightly steam them and run them through my magic bullet. If any are left whole Teddy picks them out. I give alot of different ones. |
My prefer Raw Veggies. Right now they are eating Carrots, Celery, Zuccini that I put into the Mini Chopper. They also get Raw green beans that I cut/slice into little pieces. (The chopper makes these a big mess, so I cut by hand) I also feed them Spinach Egg Noodles and a Little Low Fat Organic Cottage Cheese. They get dried cranberries and blueberries. They get cut up pieces of yellow apple after AM and PM meals. |

You can do it by hand (if you want a work out) or use food processor until they are mushy, maybe with just a bit of "lumpiness", if you're feeding them raw. Otherwise, after steaming, put in food processor and puree. Technically, you don't HAVE to puree if steaming, but it does make digestion easier. Marcel's gal mentions butternut, zucchini, and "winter" squash (for whatever it's worth). Just for clarification - the advantage of feeding the veggies raw is that you retain all the nutrients - but it can cause gastric distress as they are harder to digest. The advantage of feeding steamed is the ease of digestion (but you can add nutrients back in via a multi). |
That is interesting about the spinach. I thought Ellie was just strange.:) I have never seen anyone use butternut squash, so I wasn't sure. Then again I have never heard that you shouldn't, so we will start using that one. She does get vitamins, so I will continue to cook the veggies. They get mashed after cooking. I don't think pulverizing raw would work for us since there will still be small pieces left and Ellie forgets one little thing when she eats homecooked...chewing.:rolleyes: It looked like she swallowed about 1/8 cup of food whole the other day. She is such a piggy. |
