Dried salted beef Hello everyone Can anybody tell me whether it is safe to give my yorkie a stick of dried salted beef (similar, I think, to jerky in the USA - but not sure if yours is salted). We love eating this ourselves and Tootsy goes wild when she smells it. We gave her a couple of wafer thin slices, which she wolfed down and then cried for ages for more. It is salted and spiced and would make a lovely 'chew' for her. I could take it from her when she has had enough, rinse it with boiling water and keep it in the fridge in some foil. This should help control bacteria although the salt should help. I am just concerned that the salt would do her harm though. I would be grateful for any advice. Thanks Franceen |
I wouldn't recommend it. I'm sure alot of salt was used to cure the beef, of which still remains. |
Thanks for your reply, Grayxie, I was a little concerned about the salt been too much for her little body. How is jerky made? Is it a dried product? Franceen |
I also wouldn't give it if it's salted. Dried beef in itself would be fine, but too much salt is bad for dogs. I'm sure a teeny tiny piece wouldn't hurt him, but I wouldn't want to give something with that much salt in it |

No, dont give the dog this, it also contains preservaties as well as nitrates which are carcinogens, you can make your own dried beef if you have a dehydrator or buy the dried sliced beef in the pet store |
Thanks for the reply, soccbydo, I didn't realize that you could get dried beef in the pet shop. I will have a look. Should I boil it and dry it out in the oven to make sure it is safe? Love Franceen |
