Skin problems...Help! Lexie girl has been having major skin problems. She scratches and bites her legs, back, ect CONSTANTLY! This occurs mostly at night and in the wee morning hours, which makes sleeping for my husband and I difficult. I though that she might have skin allergies, but the vet thinks she is too young. I was using baby shampoo that the breeder recommended and have swithced to a puppy shampoo. I also read on here about missing link and have been giving her that with food for five days. I have not seen a change in the scratching. Anyone else have these problems and what do you do about them? Also, for those using missing link, how long does it take to notice a difference? |
Pebbles scratches all the time and the vet says she does not have any skin problems or mites or fleas. He told me that it was very common among Yorkies. |
By the way I have tried all sorts of foods and nothing has alleviated the itching. She is on Science Diet as it is for dogs with digestive problems. I know it is not the best but that is the one he wants her to eat! |
Gucci skin was very dry and flaky and she use to scratch a lot. She still scratches but not quite as much. I used Oatmeal shampoo . Gucci is also in Missing Link, it took a couple of weeks before I started seeing changes on her skin. I also switched her food ro Natural Balance. Good luck. Please keep us posted. |

Thanks for the info. |
Lexie has been on many foods because she is so picky! She is currently eating Nutro Max for puppies. I think that I will try the oatmeal shampoo and see if that helps. I guess it is too early to tell if the Missing Link is working. Thanks for the info :) |
You might try the puppy oatmeal shampoo. Missing Link is also good. Some Yorkies scratch if there is corn in their food. You might look on the label. |

The second ingredient is corn gluten meal. SO that can be why lexy is itching. |
I think that the itching problems began before the food change. But, what foods would you suggest? |
I just went through this nightmare not to long ago. Nina & Coby had the same exact symptoms. It was driving me insane. The vet told me it was common for yorkies to have allergies. I was just trying to pin point what was triggering the allergies. He told me to give them Benadryl. First mistake! Nina had a really bad reaction to it. She had the shakes, heavy panting, well never again. Ichanged there food to Solid Gold lamb and rice, it helped a little bit but not enough. I went ahead and started to cook home mademeals which they loved, but not much of a change. Me just going crazy and researching I came across this web site for natural medicines for animals. It has done wonders. It's been less than 4 weeks and I can honestly say Coby does not scratch anymore, Nina I have caught licking her paws just on a few occasions at night, But it's been when we have come back home from a walk. When I placed my order they told me to give it at least 6 weeks, I am so happy and relieved that it took less time to kick in. Please check into this, it's made my life,Nina & Coby's much happier. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to e-mail me. I'll be more than happy to answer any questions anybody might have. :yorkiesar http://www.carefreepet.com/index.html |
what is the natural medicine that you purchased? i am willing to try anything at this point! Thanks for the info! |
I forgot to mention, that since I did change there food several times and no change. The vet told me that it it was more than likely the Allergies to be airborn. that's why I went ahead with the natural medicine. Oh by the way I'm still cooking for by babies. :jump28ib: |
