Vomiting--help!
 

My yorkie is 5 years old now, and she has always been a bit of a "vomiter." Usually, in the past, if she ate a particularly large amount or had one too many "snacks," she would throw up some of the chunks of food later in the night. She also used to occasionally have these episodes where she would throw up clear yellow fluid (usually just a small amount) after some retching. These episodes were always just one or two throw ups and usually only about 1-2 times a year.

About 2-3 weeks ago, she had a string of 5 days where she was throwing up 1-2 times a day. The throw up was always just clear yellowish fluid. The strange thing was that she would throw up in the mornings and then that night, she would like normal. The last few days, her stools got a little looser. On day 5, I finally took her to the vet because she threw up with tiny streaks of blood. During this whole time, she was still pretty active, although, she did seem a little more clingy...always laying next to me or in my lap. The vet gave her a shot of a anti-nausea medicine and gave me a Rx for an antibiotic and some anti-nausea meds. She perked up right away after the shot and came home herself.

Well, now, I notice that she is doing her 1-2 throw up thing more frequently. She's probably thrown up about 3 times a week now. She still eats like normal and her stools are normal, but she keeps having these throw up episodes. I stopped giving her any snacks and am just giving her her food now. Her food is the same food she's always eaten (Royal canine). I'm starting to feel a little scared that something might be wrong. do you think that I should go back to the vet? What do you think is wrong? Is there any particular work up that I should ask for?

When you say "back to normal" do you mean she is throwing up in the morning?
My sister's yorkie does this alot, but its usually in the morning if he has an empty stomach. If she feeds him early enough he doesn't do it.

One thing I have noticed over the years with my Yorkies, is that they do tend to have sensitive tummies. Since all the problems with commercial pet food have come to light this year I'm always nervous. I too fed Royal Canin but they had food that was recalled. My two boys would not touch a new opened bag. I settled on Canidae wet and dry and have been feeding it since early June. It's human grade food. I honestly won't go back to any big company brand named foods. It is possible that it is the food. Was the bag recently opened? Don't mean to scare you but you just don't know anymore. Keep us all posted on how things are going with your baby.:animal-pa

I would say her "normal" was eating and playing and only throwing up once about 1-2 times a year. Since 3 weeks ago when she had her bout of throwing up every day (in the mornings) she has gotten better in that she doesn't throw up every morning anymore, but she is still throwing up a few times a week, which is more than her "normal." She is back to normal in that she is active, loves the chase squirrels, is not clingy anymore, though.

Yes, I heard about the Royal Canine recall and got nervous, too, but this bag is an old bag (not recently opened). My dog has never really eaten much so a big bag lasts us forever.

Try home cooking with some bland foods, rice, chicken, veggies. That may help settle her stomach or get it to an even temperment. Also yogurt, it has the good bacteria for the intestines.

HI! Our little Dinkey is in the hospital now with pancreatitis. Please have your little ones pancreas enzymes checked. Dinkey was eating, pooping, playing and all was good, until one morning he started vomiting. Good luck and please keep us posted on your little one.

Pancreatic enzymes, ok. I'll take her in.

I try the bland foods, too...it seems to make sense considering that's always what my mom did for me when I was young and sick.
