Are rabies shots safe? Hello, I was just curious to know everyones feelings on rabies shots? I had a beautiful healthy female yorkie, she had her usually batch of vaccines, but my vet and I decided to wait on her rabies since she was so small. She ended up getting her rabies shot at 9 months old, and the next day was found dead. Not too long ago I found a report on it online and it said that they weren't safe for small dogs. Does anyone have any proof of the pros and cons of rabies shots? (the report just stated this but did not give any proof) My puppy was an inside dog, and only went outside for potty time, supervised. Because of the circumstances my breeder, decided to replace her, but from a few breeders I was told not to get the rabies shots. I just want to keep my future little one happy, and I don't want to go thru the samething again. Thank you. |
In Florida, it is a "law" and requirement to get the rabies shot for every dog in the household. If you do not have it, they are permited to remove the dog from your property. I get the three year rabies vaccine for all three of mine and they have never had a problem. Do you think it was a bad batch of the rabbies vaccine? So sorry for your loss.:( :( |
I believe it is the law here also, one person recommended a lower dose but I'm not sure if that is possiable?? I plan on getting in contact with a few local vets, and local breeders to see what can be done. I know that some vets are more experinced with smaller dogs, so I hope there is one out here that can help with that. I just wanted to see if anyone else experianced anything like that. Thank you for replying :) :aimeeyork |

I opted not to give Lady her rabies booster this Spring when it was due. She is twelve and immune compromised due to her diabetes. She got very, very sick when she had her last booster three year ago. She had to be on steroids for a week and her blood sugar was sky high which can lead to a life threatening diabetes complication called ketoacidosis. The rabies shot can be very dangerous. Read this: http://dogs4dogs.com/JR_Articles/Rabies.html Some states allow the vaccine to be waived with a vet's certificate. I live in North Carolina which doesn't have that option. Lady doesn't go outside anymore so I am not worried about it. She has had the booster all her life so I am sure she is still protected. |
