How Much Benadryl??? I was told by the vet to give my Yorkie Benadryl for her alergies. The problem is that I can't remember how much to give her. She is 5 lbs. and almost 3 yrs old. |
The dosage for Children's Benadryl is 1 teaspoon for 12 lbs. I don't know the conversion though. Cooper is only 1.6# and his dosage is .25 mL. |
Greetings from one Tennesseean to another! :) When Sully was about 5lbs, we started noticing his allergies and took him into the vet. Our vet said 1/2 a child's dose, 3x a day for 2 days and see if that helped, which it did. (This was over Christmas of this past year....and if we hadn't gotten rid of his allergies he would have committed suicide ala scooting of his butt on my grandmother's carpet. LOL) |
i give coco children's benadryl for his allergies and my vet told me to give him 1cc per pound. so for example coco is 4lbs so i give him 4cc's once a day. i use a syringe, and i have my hubby hold him and i put it at the far end of his mouth. let us know how it goes :) |
Doesn't the Benedryl make them sleepy? Mine needs it too, but I hate to medicate her like that. Tell me what you guys diiscover. Thanks. |
Whenever you are buying allergy medicine like that, make sure to look on the label to see if it has psuedoephedrine in it, because it is lethal to our babies even in incredibly small doses. While most Benadryl doesn't, always check the label to be sure. Just a warning :) |

The usual dose is .5 to 2mg per pound. There is 12.5mg in 5cc (1teaspoon) of Childrens benadryl. Thats 2.5mg per 1cc. If I need, it I go with 1mg per pound. So I would give a 5 pound dog 2cc. Of course always check with your vet for the best advise. |

I was told 1/4 tsp. for these little ones. However, if your vet told you how much, you might want to double check with them. |
A bit of advice, please be careful with the benadryl. Awhile ago I had an issue with my Coby and Nina. They where suffering with allergies.Licking there legs, biting them and scratching was carzy. One of the first suggestions my Vet gave was Benadryl. I gave it to both of them according to there weight. It was to be given three times a day.. Well all it took was one dose for me not to give it to them ever again. Nina got the shakes something like a seizure that really scared me. Coby just kept on dosing off. I really didn't like the effect it had on them. I immediately called the vet. He told me just to discontinue it that apparently if gave Nina a side effect rapid heart beat. Passionfruit I read your thread that Sully has allergies. After that scare with Nina I kept on researching and I came across this web site that sell natural medicines for dogs. I'ts been 4 weeks so far and Nina & Coby are finally relaxing with no itching, biting or licking. please look into this is has done wonders for my dogs. http://www.carefreepet.com/index.html |
I would tell you be careful with Benadryl...our vet told us to give some to Magic when she got ant bites not to long ago, he said 1cc of children's dose...so we did, and she became very legaric and all she wanted to do was sleep, she quit eating, and eventually started throwing up!!! We had to take her to the emergency vet, where they said she must be allergic to Benadryl...she was but on some meds and now is fine...but I would defintely say be careful and only give a little at a time and watch them carefully!!! |
Thanks for the great advice, peeps! I will definitely look into those natural meds. |

A standard dose is 1-2mg per pound. My Vet Derm gives a liquid dose recommendation of 1tsp (5cc) for a dog UP TO 10lbs. For the really tiny ones, if you're worried, you could also do 1cc/lb to start - so a 3lb dog would get 3cc. |
