How much is enough? I feed Lilly 2 a day and sometimes she doesn't eat breakfast, in which case I leave some dry kibble out for her to eat when she wants. Which she doesn't seem to touch. Then if I eat anything she desperately wants it... and sometimes she finishes her bowl and looks for more... should I give her more? She does seem very skinny... but the vet said her weight was ok... any advice? |
Leave her food out for 15 minutes. If she doesn't finish it in that time take it away. Feed her normal amount for the next meal. |
I did that but then she ended up not eating for almost 3 days... |
Sounds like she is holding out for human food, and the last resort is kibble. If you are feeding her the recommended amount of food for her weight you should be fine. Chip is free fed, I put his food (dry) down in the morning and he may not touch it until 4pm. Some times when Chip is finished his bowl of food (around 10pm), I give him a small after dinner treat. |
Mmmhhh I thought she was being a scamp. Ok so you suggest I put down the bowl and after 15 minutes take it away till evening? Sorry for the dumb questions... |
Why not let her free feed? I get so confused on why people don't leave the food available at all times. Especially when they're concerned about weight or eating issues. |
Well I sort of do I guess... Like I said in my original post, if she doesn't eat her breakfast I leave dry kibble out for her to eat whenever she wants. I was told before I should take it away after 10 minutes by my trainer but when I did that she ended up not eating for nearly 2 days... Now I just leave dry kibble out two portions a day so if she doesn't eat at breakfast she can have it whenever.. |

i did the designated meal time thing too, and i do suggest this for most picky eaters. however, like your yorkie, mine sometimes wouldn't eat one meal. So to see what she would do i just left her food out all day. She ended up eating when she wanted. Sure she would still beg for food from me but i don't give it to her so then she'd go and eat her own food. Keep a tally in your head of the amount of food she eats a day. if you put a half her food down in the morning and she doesn't eat it till say 4 o'clock and she ends up eating all of it then give her the rest. if she eats it, ok, if not doesnt' matter. she'll eat it later. She doesn't have to eat her 'designated amount' every day. if its out all day long and she doesn't eat it then she doesn't need it. she's able to self-regulate. free feeding is only a problem with dogs who gobble up all the food for the day with in minutes and then want more 10 minutes later. |
i free feed also.. she eats when she is hungry. works really well for us!!(my mom also free feeds hers) ;) |
if she looks skinny, she probably is skinny.. .. leave her food out so if she does get hungry, she can eat....maybe mix something in with the dry kibble, she will eat it. |
I free fed my baby but I switched to schedule feeding and I like it better. Mainly because I can predict when she goes to poop. And also she will finish her food now, before she didn't. I have nothing against free feed so if it works for you, go for it. But schedule feeding will help you schedule your life around as well!! |
