Home Grooming For those who groom their dogs from their own home... What kind of materials/supplies do you use, and where do you get it from? Where did you get instructions on how to groom? I was just browsing through the PetEdge catalog, and they had a bunch of grooming supplies. My poodle goes to the groomers once every 1.5 months, and we pay $60 each time. Now that I have 2 dogs, we'll probably be spending about $100+ just for grooming. With that $100+, I figured I could just buy the necessary supplies, and learn how to groom them myself. I know in the long run, it'll be worth the investment, and I won't have to worry about them staying at the groomers for HOURS waiting their turn. |
Great thread, I was wondering the same thing. I hate trying myself cause i allways give in and just shave all the way down with a size 3 or 4 clipper |

I am definitely not a professional, but I have been grooming my 2 toy poodles and pups from their first 2 litters for over 1 1/2 years... I taught myself how to do it by looking at pictures and reading "Poodle Clipping and Grooming" by Shirlee Kalstone. I bought the Oster Golden A5 clippers from Ebay, the #10, #5F, and #3 blades (from Petsmart and PetEdge), the shears (scissors) from Petsmart, slicker brush from walmart, a "Greyhound comb" from Walmart, and the basic pop-up grooming table from Ebay. For hair products, all I use is Minksheen Shampoo. I don't use all of this for my Yorkies, as I only trim their rear end, feet, and ears, and scissor trim their face. Hope this helps! |

I home groom Pixie as she is a very silky coat that dosen't mat. I just took CAli to a real great groomer who thinned her out and she is much easier to groom. I have a round grooming table and she told me on the cottony coated Cali to use a slicker brush and a mat splitter. SHe told me which kind to get and I also have a Chris Christensen gold series pin brush for finishing and a CC butter comb that I use on Pixie. I will still probably send Cali out every 3 months to get thinned out. |
i would like to know just exactly what use is a slicker brush/ i have looked at them and they just seem flat on the bottom so what do they do? |

we groom Layla at home. i bought an Anis clipper with a 10 and 40 blade and a 13 mm comb which is the PERFECT length for us. I also bought coolant for the clipper and cleaner. We have ear cleaner and the powder to help pull out the hairs in her ears.... also a GOOD set of scissor and we file her nails instead of cut them. |

Also, with the shears (especially if you are grooming your own poodle) get GOOD ones! I personally love Dubl Duck. They are awesomeness. They have some curved shears that are great! Also, a good set of straight shears. For the poodles too, it is really important to blow dry the hair completley as soon as (s)he is out of the bath, this will prevent the curls from drying in tight rings and making knots. Best of luck! Oh, and also, you may want to try to use some $12 mustache trimmers for the Yorkies ears/potty area/feet. I have some Oster A5's, but my 2 like the smaller ones better, and for a begginer, you may find these are easier to handle and use with your dogs. |

I am a mobile pet grooming so I got a lot of my equipment during my training. I bought a table, tub, dryer, syptic powder, ear cleaner, etc. all through pet edge. I really love the slicker brush. It makes Tilly so soft. I am pretty sure besides helping with mats it helps bring the natural oils for their hair. :) |

What do you mean? The inside ear hair? If that is what you mean, then a good set of hemostats to grab the hair. Or, use a good set of tweezers, just be careful. If you mean trimming the hair, a small set of clippers (like the mustache ones) or a really small blade for the oster/andis clippers. |
Grooming photos and tips Quincey is 4 months old now and I can do the basic hair trimming at home but not sure how he is supposed to look at this age. Does anyone have photos? I am curious about the face, the rest I would like to grow. I had pom-a-poos with the seepy eyes etc. and close trimming around the eyes and snout was a must. Right now I can't see Quincey's eyes through the hair. Should I let it grow of trim it off??? |

I have a friend with 4 yorkies (I have two) and she has gone through 3 sets of clippers! They keep quitting on her. A Really Good Book... There is a really good book that I just got a couple of weeks ago. It's called "How To Groom A Yorkshire Terrier Perfectly.: It's written by Tammy Sprinkle. It seems a bit hard to find but I got mine on ebay. I think shipped it was just under $30. but well worth it. It gives you step by step instructions on everything and it also gives you advice and sites to buy your stuff from. I was very pleased with it and sorry that it took me so long to buy it. I'd really reccomend it to anyone, even those that take their dogs to be groomed. Elaine |
