Questions about grooming 1 Attachment(s) I have a yorkipoo and his coat is wavy, he is always itching like he may have dry skin, he was a rescue so I have no background on him, what should I use to make him less itchy? what kind of brush should I use? he is shaved right now but we are going to let his hair grow out. |
Does he have fleas? What are you feeding him? It could be allergies. 1/2 tsp. of benadryl usually helps. |
he doesn't have fleas, he eats pedigree mini crunchy bites for small breeds:confused: |
Try a dog food that is higher end. Where he is a small dog he doesn't eat very much so even though the higher end dog food is more $$$ it won't hurt the pocket book too much. Try to go for soemthign holistic, my yorkies are THRIVING on Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, but there are many other great dog food out there. You want something that is human grade, less chemicals the better. Usually if I can find it at a big box store or the grocery store...it is not always the best food. Try to find a small specialty dog food store or google the dog foo kibble test. It will give the 'grades' of dog foods. It is amazing what the change of food can do!!! I work as a dog groomer and I can tell you that after seeing the difference in skin issues with dogds who have changed their food from low quality (Iams, Purina, Pedigreee, Casear, etc) to something high end is amazing!! My advice for grooming?? Number one find a GREAT groomer, call around find someone who is nice and is up to date. Someone who attends seminars and has their CMG with ISCC, IPG or NGAA are great options. Check out their salon, is neat and tidy?? They may be really busy and not have time to talk but you can get a feel for the place, A yorkie poo will need grooming every 4-6 weeks minimum to have anice cute style. At home in between grooms use a fine tooth metal comb daily to keep the matts away!! Slicker brushes are often suggested but you need to make sure you are getting down to the skin! Most common area to matt are around any area that a collar or harness is worn, behind ear, armpits, around tail area and in between the hind legs. Really any place that causes friction. After you bath you dog make sure you get them dried and combed out perfectly or you will get knots!! Good luck!! |
