He is a beauty even with a dry frizzy coat..... I take care of a dry dull coat from the inside out. Poor coat condition can be indicator of underlying health problems. If he has had a thorough check-up and doesn't have parasites then I would try changing food and perhaps adding some emu, mink, or salmon oil to the diet. I have tried all three and have had the best results with 100% pure emu oil. It can be used as a light coat oil and for extra dry brittle coats I feed 2 or 3 drops daily as a special treat. I also use Mink Sheen -- l love the results with all my kids -- I have even used it on MY hair and on Boo the Boxer. |

Yes, work from the inside out. Start with the diet, making sure it's a 5 star dog food or you home cook like me. ;) Next make sure he get's omega 3 and 6 fatty acids every day. Omega 6 is found in safflower, sunflower, corn, evening primrose, and borage oils. Omega 3 include fish oils (especially cold water fish such as salmon, mackerel, halibut, and herring). They are also found in canola and flax oils, flax seeds, walnuts, soybeans, and freshly ground wheat germ. Next make sure you use a good dog shampoo and conditioners such as #1 ALL SYSTEMS in a concentrated form so you can dilute it down even more during the dry winters where you don't need to "deep" clean so to speak. Use a hot oil treatment once a month during warmer months and every week or two during the winter months. What I do in the winter is shampoo first, towel dry and apply the hot oil AND the conditioner, wrap them in a warm towel for 15 to 20 minutes then just do a good rinse. This leaves the coat so soft and not a bit oily. I even dilute the conditioner down quite a bit and do a mist on them before brushin. Don't brush a dry coat. It break it off really bad. By the way, your boy is so beautiful!! :D |

Kim, Sissy's coat is really funky and she gets lots of breakage easily (Minksheen doesn't work on her either, I use Buddy Wash/Rinse for her and Minksheen on Angel). I've started just a little spritz of a dry Almond Oil spray before I blow-dry her after bathing and that has made a HUGE difference. |

He is very special to me - I had to put my Pom to sleep 2 yrs ago 1st time ever having to do that - couldn't watch her suffer anymore. I found Scruffy the next day - had always wanted a yorkie but didn't want a new puppy to aggrevate a older sickly dog. He helped me go through a Very Hard time. I use Almond oil sometimes on his coat & my 7 mth old pup Stormy. I never gave it to them by mouth - didn't think of it. Thanks for your help! Kim |

I tried the Hot Oil Friday - did wonders. I didn't leave it on very long. I will try 15 minutes with both hot oil & conditioner in a few weeks. I don't brush dry anymore - Mary (mardelin) taught me that one. I do comb head hair for a topnot though. Mary suggested Flaxseed Oil also - I haven't found it yet - I will try GNC next week. Thanks for the complement- everyone thinks he is girl because of his cute babydoll face! kim |

Sissy's coat looks like Lexi's coat - it breaks very easily too & doesn't grow long because of that. I stopped brushing inbetween baths - only when blowdrying. I don't blow dry her hair throughly because of the breakage. I have noticed last week that her hair on her head is breaking when I comb for a topknot. I will start to spray her head with oil to make a topkot only when she dresses up. |

Have any of you tried the Touch of Mink shampoo? Hear it is what most groomers of show dogs use. Also, I have read on various websites, books, etc. that you want to brush your Yorkie daily as this was beneficial to a healthy coat. But I see post that say never brush dry? What gives? Do I need to quit brushing my baby? |
