cleaning eye gunk??
 

I noticed last night that Rusty had some eye gunk collected on the hair under his eyes. I tried to clean it with a warm-damp washcloth, but he wouldn't let me near it!

How do you guys clean this stuff off:confused: ? Thanks!

I have a brush thats made just for that.. so I run it over that gunk after I bathe them and it works perfectly.

I use a flea brush. I normally only have to do it when I wash them so I do it towards the end when it's moistened.

I usually just use the warm wash cloth. Then brush it out.

I use a small tooth comb and also get the hair wet with warm water. Wait for it to get soft and then comb it out.;)

I wash Susanah's face every morning and every night before bed so eye gunk is rarely a problem for us.

When it is though, I use the warm washcloth, then brush it out method as well. Works like a charm.

if there are any dried chunks I hold a warm, wet washcloth on Sugar's eye for a few minutes. The same thing I did for my skinbabies when they had clogged tear ducts as a baby. I truly feel like I have a baby again.

Otis has allergies so he has increased eye gook. I pick out the hard crusties, but he gets some down in the hair that hardens kind of like an "eye booger mat". I put some vasoline on the hardened part to soften it until I can break it up. Both my boys hate to be groomed so I can relate. You may have to resort to having someone else hold your baby's head so you have get them out with a wash cloth or your fingers. Good Luck

where did you get the brush just for the gunk?

I use the comb part of a human eye-brow brush every evening. Dried eye gunk is not a problem.

I have to wash Tink's face and eyes each morning because of this too.
I think her problem is her hair is not long enough yet and is laying near the eye.

Human eyebrow brush is a great idea! I'll have to try that. I'm constantly trying to get the boogers out of Mia's hair.

The vet uses gauze pads that have been soaked in warm water. She just holds them gently against the gucky part and it softens the matter, then it will wash or comb out without it pulling the hair. I try to clean around the eye area everyday even though it may not be "gucky", therefore, the dog gets use to the washing and knows it won't always hurt to be touched. I like to whisper to them while I am doing it, telling them what a good girl and boy they are. They love the attention. Good luck.

I use a soft tooth brush (the tip); real problem right now w/ Marcel bc pollen is high and it seems to be bothering him. You can check pollen in your area at www.pollen.com. :)

I usually bathe Jaya and Jenna every two days, so that is when I remove the gunk from their eyes. After their bath, I just use a comb and comb it out.

Both mine had issues with it (and everything else), but you must perservere... be persistent - after a few times (or more ;) ), they will just sit there quietly and accept it.... you may have to endure a few dirty looks haha...

What I used to do with Jenna is roll her up in her towl so that only her head would be peeking out. Then I'd hold her between my legs while i sat at the edge of the tub, or just have her lay tummy side up between my legs, and then hold her head (gently) with one hand and comb out the gunk with the other.

What I found really got them used to it was to use my fingers initially. Neither of them would do anything if i had my fingers in their face, but they'd freak out if the comb was there. So, once they stopped fussing over my fingers, i slowly introduced the comb.

I know its gross using your fingers, and its not nearly as effective, but for me, it was the only way..... plus..they're like my babies so I didnt mind too much.... (if we can pick up poop, and change our skin babies poopy diapers, a little eye-gunk is nothing ;) )
