Puppy Cut Hi guys, I want to start cutting my Yorkie boys fur myself. It is starting to get too expensive to take him to the Doggie Parlour. I can't currently buy a grooming table so will just be using an ordinary table. How hard/easy is a puppy cut?? |
3 Attachment(s) I don't find it that difficult, but it is time consuming. It would probably take less time if you use clippers, but I like Chewy's hair a little longer so I scissor cut it. I use small clippers just to do his ears, belly and privates. After I bathe and blow him dry, the cut takes me about an hour or so. Because I'm still learning, after the cut, I sometimes go back and make adjustments. I did buy a DVD on grooming, and that helped quite a bit. Here's a couple of pics... |
Wow...Chewy looks great. Can you come over and do Zoey? Hee Hee :) |
I just purchased a DVD on Yorkie grooming from e-bay. It's the third addition and has the puppy cut in it. I have not watched yet. Maybe this will help you. ..http://cgi.ebay.com/YORKIE-DOG-groom...9QQcategoryZ20 751QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemthat would be a help to you. |

I printed out Chewy's pic to show my groomer. Last time they cut her back too short. It made Zoey's head look huge. I think the hand scissoring is a good technique. |
I took Cozy to Petsmart to get groomed and since you can watch them groom your dog I watched and have been cutter her myself ever since. I cut her body and neck short but leave her face long. I use human barber kit with a shaver and scissors. Work slow. If you cut too short remember hair grows and your pup won't hold is against you. |
1 Attachment(s) After I got my second yorkie I soon became my own groomer. (i'm too cheap to pay $80+ for 2 dogs!) I keep Beanie's hair longer but Jac gets a very short puppy cut. He looks really good like this and it's VERY easy to maintain! I got the Oster brand of clippers at Petco and scissor cut around his face and use a mustache clipper on the nose. The first few times I did it he had to wear a sweater because it looked awful! Luckily, yorkie hair grows back fast! |
Looks like you guys have become very good groomers. |
Be very careful when learning. I accidentally cut my Zoey on her rear earlier this summer with sissors and she had to have stitches. It was one of those moments when I saw some hair that I had missed and thought I would quicky cut it off. Big mistake. I now use clippers more. But before this incident I had given her a puppy cut with sissors and she looked great. What I think surprised me is that once you start cutting their hair you realize they really do not have that much hair. |
Thanks for the tips guys. Where did you find the Yorkie grooming DVD??? |
