What age to start? I was just wondering around what age should you start grooming? Abby is 5 months old and the hair on her face is getting in her eyes, and her hair on her feet is getting what seems to be to long. Also her "elimination" is now getting stuck in her fur on a daily basis. I was thinking of taking her to the groomers but i've heard that you shouldnt do it until they are one year old? Is that true? |
Zachary will be five months old the 4th of September and he has been twice. The first time she trimmed his nails and the fur around his feet. Also, around his rear end. This week, she trimmed his nails again, the fur around his feet and rear end. Also, he had his one third of the hair trimmed off of his ears. The time before she shaved them completely so the one would come up and it did. I didn't have her trim any of the fur on his face as I want the yorkie look with the longer hair and the top knot. |
If you have a groomer that you TRUST, I suggest you take her as soon as she has her shots. Don't expect a great cut the first few times (although my groomer did great with Coby). But when they go young, they are mainly learning to not hate the groomer. You can also help the groomer by frequently messing with her face and feet (the places that the puppies usually hate being messed with). Mess with her feet, spread her little toes, and then give her a treat. Her face, her ears.... Get her used to it. Then the groomer won't be as stressful. Good Luck! |
My vet has an in-house groomer that does a great job. We started taking Emma there when she was about 4-5 months old. She started with a "puppy's first groom" day, where she kept her for the day...gave her a bath, then let her play, then dried her and combed her, then gave her treats, etc. until she was used to being there. Then she just trimmed up her face, feet, and butt a little, and let Emma sniff around at all the new stuff in the new place...she only charged me $20 for that. Each time she added a little more time and a little more grooming to the routine until she could give Emma a full groom. I think it was less stressful for Emma to do things that way. She was used to the groomer and being there, and now we don't have any problem dropping her off there for a day of pampering! |

I have a great one too, but we never got a "day"!! ;) |
We're coming to Iowa for that grooming day! Keep that groomer happy! We have a great groomer too and Izzy really was started from the time she was a puppy...Izzy's breeder also shows Yorkies and she was getting groomed the minute she was able to. But when bringing her home she had to get used to someone else so we did the same thing.....meet the new groomer; let the groomer do little things at first and then build on that trust. She still hates to go on her back to get combed on her tummy but I'm working on that at home as well....she loves her belly rubbed but not when she sees the brush or comb coming her way...lol Opps - forgot Izzy is 8 mos now. |
groomimg Five months is a little late to start grooming. I start grooming puppies at 5 weeks. At this age, I would NEVER take them to a groomer. I would never take them anyway after what I have seen. Yorkies seem more relaxed when thier owner does the grooming. You get to spend lots of time with them too. The price of grooming equipment is alot cheaper over the lifetime of the dog than to keep going to the groomers. You might have a mobile groomer come to your house. That way you can be there and the pup might not be as scared. Good luck!!! Lynn |
And one more question... I wanted to keep her hair long but she has a cotton(soft) coat, which needs brushing at least every morning and night (I do that now) just to keep it from matting and her hair is about 3-4 inches long. She spends about 2/3 of the day play-fighting with my pug, Bo. I'm afraid that if i let her coat get really long its just going to be a problem, especially with her level of activity, and i was wondering if it would just be better for her if i just keep it short. |
I'd start as soon as possible, so they get use to it. |

I took Lucy as soon as she finished her shots. They started out slow. First time trimming feet and cleaning ears and added each time. Now she has a mobile groomer that we love and I can sit in there with her during her grooming. I love it! |
I always keep their butt areas trimmed so that the poo thing doesn't happen...The poo can get stuck and then they can get very constipated, and it's painful for them. The hair on the head, you can either start pulling it up into a little clip or a band or you can trim it. My husband and I do all the grooming at home...everything from nails to expressing the anal glands only if necessary...I had a bad experience with my previous dog (RIP Buddy) at a groomer's... |
