Grooming Video??
 

I have been very interested in becoming a groomer for a while, but no one will hire me without any professional experience:( I don't have the time or money to go to school for it, but I was wondering if anyone knows of some good videos where I would be able to watch them and learn on my own and experiment on my own dogs. Please let me know if anyone has any idea, Thanks!

Its hard to learn all the aspects of being a professional groomer from a video. Videos do help, but without hands on experience and guidance from an experienced groomer, I dont think you will get too far. I worked for free to learn to groom. It was a pay-off. The groomers taught me to groom and I did alot of work for them. I put in long hours and then went to my paying job that I still do. I learned alot until the groomer did a few unethical things that I couldnt live with so I quit. Good luck, Lynn

Thank you for your advice! Are you grooming at all anymore? This is something that I have thought of doing, but didn't know how to go about it. I do have a close friend that owns a grooming shop, mabey I will talk to him about this. How often did you go there to work for free? I would'nt be able to do it very often because I still need to keep my paying job also :)

The quickest way to get a job in a grooming salon is as a brusher and bather. It's hard work but you learn as you go. B&B are always in demand as are good groomers.

I worked for free about 4 days per week. It is hard work and back breaking. I dont groom anymore. I have my own show dogs to groom and work 40 plus hours per week. I also thought about being a groomer at one time when I was younger. But, I couldnt see not having great health insurance. I never needed it when I was younger, but I really need it now. Maybe your friend will let you help and watch at his shop. Best of luck, Lynn

Thanks for yur help, I emailed my friend to see what he thought about me helping out in his shop, we'll see what happens:) I am not worried about the insurance thing, I have been self employed cleaning houses for 6 years, so I know what it's like to be self employed. My home is also commercially zoned and it would be a great place to have a dog grooming business. I hope it works out!:D

The first thing you need to learn is how to handle animals and that is something you can not learn from a video. If you are serious, go in to all your surrounding shops and talk to the groomers, maybe one of them will let you work in their shop, start with Saturdays as the shop always can use extra hands on the weekends. One of the best books I have bought on grooming is called " Notes From The Grooming Table" I use it when I am teaching. But grooming is something you must learn hands on, for your safety and most of all for the dogs safety.

I have groomed for almost 30 years and I still love going to work, but I pick my dogs and my clients now and I have a very strong young man to help me lift all of my dogs....life is good..I can't imagine any other job that would make me smile so many times a day.

Grooming is not for everyone , it can be hard work, don't expect for someone to train you and pay you. I charge $6,000 for 4 months of training, and so far all that I have trained have gone on to happy jobs and to this day are still employed.

If you love dogs and you are a gentle person with great love and understanding , grooming is a great way to make a living.

Thank you for all your advice! It's very helpful coming from someone who is living the grooming life! I understand that knowing how to handle animals is a big part of it:) I have learned a lot through dog training and books and through my own animals regarding this, so I am pretty comfortable handeling them. I know in a grooming setting it could be a lot different though. I am very excited to learn, I love grooming my little yorkie, and my two big huskies. I would be a happy woman If I could make a living this way!:D
