Puppy fur?? Hello everyone! Bella is just over 8 months old and I have let her hair grow up to this point with the exception of a couple trims at the groomers. She has gotten some mats around her legs and under her chest that I can't get out. Should I have the groomers try to get the mats out or do you think I should have her hair shaved short and let it grow longer? Wouldn't it be better for her hair to be more silky and grow a nice coat if I shave it down to get rid of all the puppy fur and mats and then let it grow? Her hair now is kind of cottony from the puppy hair. I'm new to this so any advise is truly appreciated. What does everyone think? :) |
I had to have Penny shaved down, and her coat is growing in beautiful. I would have her shaved down. |
I let Gracie's puppy coat pretty much grow out until she was about 13 months old. She tangled where the puppy hair met the adult coat. She looked so funny with half silver, half black in length. At the last trip to the groomer, I had her clipped to about 1 1/2" length. All of the puppy hair is gone, except for a tiny spot on the tip of her tail. Her adult coat is so soft and shiny. I wish I had done this several months ago. |
I decided to shave Bella down to get rid of the mats and puppy fur. We go to the groomers tomorrow. What type of cut do I tell them to do? She's never had short shaved hair so I am nervous of what it will look like. Thanks for all the great advise! |
4 Attachment(s) i just had the same thing happen with Daisy she had problems matting in the legs because of puppy hair and she had gone out on fresh cut grass and was a total mess i couldn't get the matts out but she has a really long coat so i shaved her legs and belly:eek: i'll post a few pics but i am hoping that it will grow back fast lol. I just couldn't bare to cut all her hair off. her length hides most of it but i am glad i did now maybe it will come in nicer. the second pic i lifted up her hair to show it shaved but the hair covers it when it's down lol i also gave her little lions feet OMG i am a dork i know! |
If you take a matted dog to the groomers, you may not get what you want, a groomer only has so many miracles and she may be out of them that day. Talk to her about the trim and what she can do after she feels the matting. She may have to shave all the matts off and that may be next to the skin depending on how tight they are to the skin. The groomer may be able to comb them out but it will take her extra time and it will probably cost you extra money, If she does this for you ....Don't forget her tip!!! Thanks for all of the great info. Bella's appointment at the groomers went really well and her hair turned out how I wanted.:) |
I had a problem recently with my Puppy Stormy. This is a link to the thread - I got some wonderful advise from Mardelin (Mary) on getting Puppy tangles out & Preventing them. Well worth reading!!! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=85276 |

4 Attachment(s) Here are a few pictures of Bella's hair cut. Her hair is really soft and silky now. The groomer ended up having to shave her down pretty short because the mats were so bad. The length is about 1 inch so it's not too short. I think Bella really feels good to get rid of all that hair because she has been running wild since yesterday after her hair cut, lol. As you can tell Bella still has her long tail because here in Germany it is illegal to cut them short. The first picture is her before pic and the last three are after her cut! :) |
Bella came out looking very cute!!! |
So Glad I'm so glad you posted this question. I was getting ready to ask the group the same question. Rowdy is four months and lately he's developed some mats. I've been able to comb out most of them. My groomer is getting him Tuesday. I didn't know what to tell her to do with him so now I think I'll have her cute him close like you all suggested. He's having a lot of bad hair days lately with his baby fur and adult coat mixing in. Thanks again. I'll let you know how he turns out. Oh yeah, some of his matting problem comes from him jumping in the pool with me several times a day. |
3 Attachment(s) Lucy had some bad mats on her legs and belly when I took her to her first grooming appointment last saturday. After talking with the groomer I decided to just shave her down so she would enjoy her first grooming experience and enjoy going back again and again. Here is a picture of Lucy before and after! |
