Ear hair weighing down Ears? Lola's ears use to stand up on their own since she was a pup... but now it just seems like she has so much hair on her ears that they don't stand up anymore.I met this lady at costco who said that I should keep the hair on her ears short otherwise they'll be floppy permanently. Do you think trimming of the hair will work or is it too late? |
It never hurts to try, besides they look better with the ears trimed. The weight of the ear hair will pull the ears over and it all depends on how long you have let this happen weather the ears will go back up. Good luck to you. |
drooping ears My 4-month yorkie has the same problem. Her ears used to stand up perfectly, now both are down. I can't tape them because the other yorkie will chew the tape off for sure. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Any good suggestions? |
I keep the top 1/3 of the ear trimmed. As far as the 4 month old, she is probably teething and the ears will go up and down. It wouldn't hurt to trim the ears on her too. |

I actually bought her with erect ears they only went down when she started teething. They are floppy now. She's still adorable and i get many compliments about her beautiful face. I took her to get groomed one time and the groomer there is also a breeder and she thought my girl had a very pretty face. I didn't think I'd get many compliments on her because of her ears but I have :D Not that it matters to me. They only thing I was told is that ears tend to flop when they are teething sorry can't be of much help. |
floppy ears Thank you both for the responses. I guess it's ok with me as well. I don't need people to give compliment on my yorkies anyway, as long as floppy ears aren't related to the puppy's poor health. Standing up ears do look healthier than drooping ears though. It's good for me to know that it might have to do with teething. Talking about trimming the top 1/3 hair of the ear. Is my puppy going to be fine if I used electric clipper with guiding comb? Will I actually risk the danger of cutting her ears? Please don't bother to give me lots of instructions if this is a complicated question. |
1 Attachment(s) I shaved 1/3 off Soleil's ears and her ears when straight up!! She is 10 weeks old tomorrow!! Id give it a whirl... Dawn |

No matter what I do, Hoku's ears flop. Kalani is almost 8 months and I still have to keep his ears trimmed or one will flop also. I don't use the comb guide when I trim their ears, I just put my finger behind the ear as I shave it. Do be careful when you trim the edges, I use scissors for that part - I've heard their ears bleed like crazy if nicked. |
Try cutting a template to fit the inside of the ear, out of a file folder, outside of check-book cover... Shavee the ear on the inside....cover the template with surgical glue ( get it at any drug store - Duo Surgical glue . Place the cut out form on the inside ear, pressing it in place and hold until it dries....this will keep the puppies from removing tape. Make sure that the form goes all the way down, but take precaution that you don't obstruct the ear canal opening. Leave up for 5 days, down for 2.....if the ears flop down again, repeat. Now the surgical glue will get on the ear furnishings... use cold cream, and wash..it will eventually come off. |
floppy ears Thank you all for the help. I adore all of your yorkie's photos. I hope my two yorkies grow up as cute and beautiful as yours. Being a new puppy owners, I just felt there are endless questions and things to do in order to take care of them. Joining yorkie talk really has helped me learn so many new things. Wow! (unlike yahoo talk, people there sometime gave you nonsense answers, or even insulted you just because they knew nothing about taking care of puppies.) |
Thank you for all the responses... I tried to shave some of the hair off and they seem to be standing up more frequently now... What the best grooming utensil for the ears? i was using an andis trimmer |
Grooming tools I ordered a Wahl, which just came in two days ago. It worked well. It comes with a small bottle of oil, a comb, electric clipper with 4 guiding combs, a scissor, and a grooming video. I am too new at the grooming thing, so I tried not to rush myself and the puppies. They don't seem to like it. The yelping sound and the twitching motions always scared me and I had to back off. I am so scared of hurting them by accident. And it took forever to just want to get a certain tiny thing done. I cleaned the hair around the anal area better with the clipper. Just make sure you don't actually touch the anus, which can cause pain there. Having the tools handy is good for in between professional groomings, don't you think? I am sure your Andis tool works just fine as well. |

I always have mine trimmed when they get groomed, and we have no problems with floppy ears. |
