How to express the anal gland on your dog Hello everyone: Please review the following video, concerning the anal gland: http://www.expertvillage.com/videos/...ics-glands.htm I found this video to be very good. Tulip |
PLease don't express the anal glands unless it's really a major problem, otherwise once you do it, you will need to keep doing it regularly. |
Yorkiedaze is right about the anal glands. Thank you for the reminder. However, I would like to thank you for that link! I have been looking everywhere for good dog grooming videos and that series is very informative. I noticed some other dog-related videos there too that I want to check out. Thanks for sharing this site with us! :) |
Hello Yorkiedaze: Thanks for your advice, I have read quite a few threads, from individuals wanting to know. I was searching for something else on the net, and came across the video, I thought it would be nice to provide individuals with the knowledge, which they have been looking for. Not to discredit you concerning your statement, but maybe you could elaborate your reasoning behind your statement. This way the reader can have a wider understanding. Are you a professional Vet? My vet said exactly this last week when I had Lucy in. He also advised me to "not try this at home". He said if I encountered a problem to drop by and he'd look at her for me with no charge. I respect my vet so I'm going with his recommendation. BTW - I'm not knocking your post at all, just participating in the discussion :) |
thank you so much. i always wanted to know how to do this |
Hello KathyinCali: As I previously mentioned, I found this video to be interesting for those individuals who have been searching for this information, I was looking for something else. Not to take away from your support, but I truly believe in self-help. If you review the video, it indicates, that the groomer has many years of experience. I find that on this particular board, there are many intelligent women and men, who find that they can provide for their pet(s) welfare. Now, the fact that Yorkiedaze, has been kind enough to express her opinion about this, would send a red flag, to those individuals who might be willing to do it on their own. At the same time, I am sure there are those individuals, who may totally ignore Yorkiedaze advice. Knowledge is everything. Tulip |
Thanks for posting that site, it has some really helpful grooming info. As for the anal glands.......I will just leave that up to the vet, if need be. |
My vet said not to do this unless there is a problem. The glands will take care of themselves. He said that if you do it once, it has to be done all the time. The video is useful if you have to express the glands, but don't start doing this if not required. |
Hello Pea: I heard that Brittney Spears, is going to get married to President Bush, once she rescues him from the Democratic castle.:D Tulip |
My husband expressed Reece's glands about 2 months ago when he was "scooting" around on the carpet...since then we havent had to do it since...no more scooting either...its very simple to do and less messy when giving a bath.. Dawn |
Hello Sweetr72: Thank you, for sharing your willing experience of self-knowledge, I am happy to hear that there are pet lovers that are willing to self learn about their beloved pets. Happy Steven Harper day:thumbup: Tulip |

Forgive me if I have missed something here, but this is a public site, and as long as I obey the rules of the administrator, I do belive that I am entitled to share information, which I believe is important to others. At the same time, I would be the first to agree, that anyone can make statement, based on their opinions and beliefs. I am taken aback, when individuals post information or share information, you have others come out and say that this or that particular method should not be preformed. I find this type of response to be wrong, If an adult individual wants to take his/her pets welfare into their own hands, then others should respect their choices. A good example would be the crazy article which I read on an American site, that indicated that by microchipping your dog(s) was a reason for the government to keep track of the owners. I chuckled with amusement....just another example of American society, dictating to their citizens, on what they can do, or should not do. Whatever happened to free will? Because of free will, I own a yorkie, whose gene pool has been altered by some individual who decided they wanted a smaller version of the original Yorkshire Terrier. It is a very good thing, that a slender man, with a black top hat, did not inform that individual, that he/she could not create such excellent breed of a dog. Tulip |

Here is the article that I am referring to: New Jersey Raises Privacy Concerns & Eyebrows -Task Force Wants Country's First Pet (Owner) Database http://dogpolitics.typepad.com/my_we...y_concern.html Tulip |
I think the issue here was not whether or not people should have access to that information. Of course people should have knowledge. The only problem is that some people might not realize the dangers possibly involved with doing this procedures themselves. I believe the other posters were trying to warn OTHERS not to try this at home unless they put a LOT of thought into it first. If I were to just view that video with no prior knowledge, I might think that expressing anal glands is something you need to do on a regular basis. That is misinformation. We all want to educate, but we don't want to misinform and there is a very fine line between the two sometimes. |

My view point is that if an individual say's, you should not do this or that, then you are obliged to say why. Sweetr72's husband is a good example, of what can happen, if you have the knowledge and the initiative. I have read so many threads, where others have asked a question, only to receive a blank answer or no answer at all. Misinformation, I saw nothing about misinformation, while reviewing the video with an experienced groomer, with over ten years of experience. I have reviewed other videos and decided not to post them, because I felt that they lacked information. At the end of the day, I believe that I was justified at posting the video, and I will continue to post information that I believe might be useful for others. At times I find certain part of this forum, to be stringent, to what one should say, I am not an American, nor do live in America, so I find it just impossible to allow somone to revoke someone's decision or willingness to share information. Forgive me, I don't know what all the hoo-ha is over anal glands. I appreciate the link b/c it's got a lot of what I perceive to be, helpful information on dog grooming, which I don't know too much about. Also, I believe that my vet told me that the anal glands would usually take care of themselves, and if not, that the groomers usually took care of it, or I could bring him in and they'd (the vet's)do it. I think it's always a good thing to know how to do almost anything for our pets that we can, even if we aren't experts at it just in case. I have never had the need to express my dog's anal glands, but I know once, he'd just gotten back from the groomer's and they hadn't done it (I wouldn't have known what the problm was) but Max was walking a little funny and the tooth cleaning lady was at my neighbor's cleaning her dog's teeth~ she'd just come from my groomer's and said "what's wrong with Max's right leg, he's walking funny" and she took a look at him and said "oh, I think his anal glands need to be cleaned" and pronto, she did it right there lickity split and he was fine. I wouldn't do it myself, unless I had to, but I live in CA, and I'm a little weirded out about the "BIG ONE" (earthquake) and I just want to know how to do as much for ourselves as I can in case it becomes necessary. I'm not trying to be argumentative either, but since Max has been on the diet he's been on for over a year now, I doubt that they ever need to express his anal glands at all anymore. I'm sure that his eliminations do a good job of it. |

I think the experiences of others are useful. If someone posts about a procedure and others have differing experiences, I want to hear all sides and decide for myself. |
1 Attachment(s) I just wanted to thankyou for this helpful video on anal glands. Thankfully my vet told me to drop Jack off and she would take care of it when needed....at no charge for that matter..... She's a wonderful doctor. Jack and I are lucky to have her. Lisa, I loved Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam...Great era for dance music. |
