Question on ear training and grooming Hi Everyone, Last night I purchased a AKC 10 month old female yorkie that needs some attention to her coat. She's a pretty big girl...I think she weighs between 6 and 8 pounds... The people loved her but didnt have time to take care of her coat. She's matted everywhere but its the small little matts close to the skin. I hate to have a groomer shave her down... I have picks and tools here at my house to use to get the mats hopefully...problem is I don't want to tug on her fur.....is there any tool that can get close to the skin without pulling and tugging the mats? I want to bathe her but not until I get these mats out! Another question I have is her ears are floppyand will only stay up when she tilts her head...is it possible with her age to brace them and actually have them up? Thanks for all your help everyone.....for listening to me! |
i had the same problem with frankie when he was young and i got lots of good advice on here about demating tools. however his matts were quite bad and close to the skin and was very painfull to try to remove. he would cry and cry like i was killing him. i took him to a groomer and she said the same thing it was way too painfull to dematt him so we shaved him down. now i just brush him a little bit every day and hasnt matted again. i know its hard to shave them but really its just hair and it grows back! hes much happier and so am i. plus he actualy looked kinda cute shaved! with his little pin head and big ears lol good luck with you baby! |
Yorkietalk taught me about Cowboy Magic. I now swear by that stuff and won't be without it. You can get it at a "tac n tog" shop where you get horse supplies. One little dab the size of a pea, will take mats out, very easily. I use a wire like comb, and start at the bottom and comb up to the top where the mats are. It may be a little pricey, but believe me, you'll be glad you bought it. |

I would take it very easy on the new baby though! It may be better to have her shaved down and grow back a new coat. |
I had the same problem with my 1st yorkie a few years ago & used Cowboy Magic Detagler - it was alot of work - it took a few days to get all the matts out. Just worked on him a little, then gave him a break about every hour. I now have the matting problem on my 4 mth old puppy. I started a thread on it last week - please check it out. Mardelin helped me Greatly with those nasty matts!!! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=85276 |
As far as the ears go, it's possible to tape them and train them before 6 monthes of age, after that it's iffy. The ears may be floppy because the hair weighed them down for too long and broke the cartledge. If this is the case they won't come up again. Try taping them for 3 days and see if they will stand. If not floppy ears are cute too. |
I always shave the top third of my Yorkies ears at all ages. It might help yours to shave. Also - if you are going to try taping them up - shave the ears first, then tape. |
