Help me get the matts out! I have NEVER had a matting problem with my other two...but Gemma came to me with matts down close to her skin. If I just brush with a brush, you'd never know the matts were there (which I assume is what the breeder did) but the comb will not go through! And it's getting worse. I really don't want to shave her!! But I feel it may be the only thing to do?!? She cries when I try to take them out...she is so tiny and delicate! And if I shave her, all her black hair will be gone and the silver will be there! Which I like but I like her to look like a puppy still! Any ideas on what to use to get them out? Of course I've tried all the detangling sprays I have.... Any ideas??? |
The only thing that will get those matts out is a slicker brush. Don't scrape the skin. It get's those matts out really great and is what all groomers use. Work on a little area at a time till they are all out, then shampoo and use a really good conditioner so they don't matt up again. Be sure to use the slicker to brush every day, then comb. |

You can try rubbing a bit of cowboy magic detangler into the mat before brushing, or you can simply just cut the mat out. |

I used to get Cricket's matts out with Plushpuppy's Blowdry Cream and a comb. The heavy cream made them slick, oil would probably work too. I warn you it takes a while. Puppy coat can be a pain in the butt. |
my new little boy vinnie is the same way. i have been brushing him little by little each day. it seems to be working. when i first go him, there were no mats but when the silver started to show, there were matts all over the place. weird!! |
If worse comes to worse you could get a demattiing comb. They have blades on them that will cut through the matt |

OH poor baby. I hate matts that are close to the skin like that. You may need to just cut it out |
Try doing one mat at a time when she's tired. Get her to burn up some energy and then give it a go. Put conditioner in and let it soak in her hair a bit, then try to work it out with your fingers first. Then use the comb. If not you may need to just cut her hair and let it grow out. I know it's sad to see their hair go though :( Good luck! |
I to am still struggling with this problem. i tried everything sugested from conditioners to a dematting comb nothing seems to work!! also mine hates being brushed as well..is it just because its puppy coat? will it get better as his silver comes in more? i feel so bad because he cries and cries when i brush him and i get bit! is there a positive way to groom them? |
I use Cowbow Magic Detangler after bathing Bengi. Then use a slicker brush for the matts, I use it very gently because he doesn't like it. Try giving her some treat to calm her. |
If you have a petsmart near you with a horse department, you can find cowboy magic there..a lot of people have had success with it :) |
I love the slicker brush and actually just got one when I was in MI . . . it sure has improved Annika's coat even better . . . . so maybe you can try those, but make sure you get the soft kind :) Also, cowboy magic is a good one to try out. |
i swear by Cowboy Magic. if it is just one or two matts, i rub a generous amount right into the matt. If it's all over and down to the skin like the girl puppy I am keeping, i put a generous amount in the palm of my hand and rub it right into the skin. It seems to help and as thick as her hair is, it doesn't cause it to look oily. |
Thank you! I looked for a store with Cowboy Magic and it says I can get it up the road I live on! We have horses all over this road and there is a feed store I could walk to! I'm gonna try it! I have used a little baby oil since yesterday and it helps a little more, and at this point I don't care if she looks greasy for a while till we get them out! The grease actually keeps her hair smooth (the part that I've gotten matt-free)!! |

I had the very same problem with my 1st Yorkie Scruffy. Poor Baby - I took a couple of days to get the Matts out. We just would give him a break & try again later until he was matt free. Baby Oil did the trick - Then I learned about Cowboy Magic on YT after. I have used it ever since then. I have 4 Yorkies now & won't have that problem again. I always use a conditioner on my Furbabies now even when they are little pups. My favorite is Plush Puppy Shampoo, Conditioner & Blow Dry Cream. It works for all the different coated Yorkies I have. I also have the Plush Puppy Seabreeze Oil for my Wirey/Combination Coated Lexi. I use Cowboy Magic for combing in between weekly baths. |
Tink got terrible matts when she was tiny. It took me a week to work them all out using Cowboy Magic and my fingers. I aslo thought I was going to have to shave her. It just took time and patience. I did have to cut a couple of them out. Now, after every bath, as soon as she is dry, I work a dollop of it through her hair and we've never had another matt. I love that stuff! |

My female puppy Sophie gets mats very easily when she plays rough with Tucker. I use this tangle remover: http://missyt.shopshurepets.com/Prod...id=124&cid=103 (The key is to spray it on the mats, leave it on for 5 minutes, then use the edge of a comb to untangle the mat.) I have one travel size sample of this, if you would like to try it I will send it to you! I have never used this, but it is an Emu Oil spray: http://missyt.shopshurepets.com/Prod...id=142&cid=103 and an Emu Oil shampoo that I have used and like: http://missyt.shopshurepets.com/Prod...id=141&cid=103 Good luck!
