Anal Glands Always full!!!! Baby has had her anal glands expressed 3 times since I have had her and each time they have been overly full. She vomits that white foamy stuff and my groomer says it's from the anal glands. Why do they get full so quickly? Is there anything I can do to slow them down? |
Sorry, I don't know. But my S-I-L's Bichon has that problem. Only thing is their groomer won't do it. She has to take him to the vets for that. I hope you find an answer. |
Some dogs have more of a problem with expressing their glands so once the glands are emptied manually they will just fill back up. Have you tried changing her food? My chihuahua had this problem, but since we changed her food to Natural Balance Duck and Potato she hasn't had a problem at all. Our vet says to pay close attention if they do have a problem as the glands can become infected (abscessed) and rupture. This would require an emergency vet visit. |
when I 1st got her 3 months ago (I adopted her) she was not on a very good diet. I think she ate like Purina or some cheapy brand. I have switched her to Holistic Eagle Branda. She is not vomitting now as much. I may need to have them checked one more time. I think they were just so overly full from never being expressed before. Baby is 4 years old, so that is a long time to go without having them cleaned out! |

As soon as the kids get up I feed them cooked baby carrots or scrambled eggs with cheese & a couple of pieces of apples. They haven't vomited at all since they get something in their bellies 1st thing. Hope changing your brand of food helps. |
i have found that feeding more dry food instead of canned produces firmer stools. i think it might help the empty them on their own. i recently added canned food (only to give medication) and i have found that my yorkies seem to have their anal glands emptied sooner than before we introduced the canned food. and they only have super small amounts of the canned. |
When you bathe them, just express the glands, it is very easy. They are located at 4:00 and 8:00 to the anus. Just take your thumb and forefinger and squeeze toward the anus and pull slightly towards you. Sounds gross but it pops right out..... ......... That way you can rewash the area and they will be fine & happy............:p God Bless |
I feed Nutro Kibble and a baby carrot each morning and none of my yorkies have ever had a problem with their anal glands. |

We've NEVER expressed our dogs' anal glands and have never had a problem with it. |
My yorkie never needs her anal glands emptied, but my maltese does. When I got him 2 months ago I noticed that he would drag his butt and I noticed that he would smell, I finally figured out that it was his anal glands. I read on here about how to empty them and I did. I am not sure how big everyone elses anal glands get but his was bulging out and you could just look at his bottom and see that they were so swollen. I was afraid that they were abscessed so my daughter took him to the vet a couple days later when he went for his last set of shots at the vet he emptied them again and said that they were full again. I have had to do this a few times since then too. It looks like that he might always have this problem. I have read somewhere that some dogs have to have thiers removed. Has anyone heard of having them removed? |
Vetasyl Capsules from the vet My lil girl had anal gland issues and the Vet gave me some Vetasyl Capsules. I sprinkle a little on her yogurt every night before bed.She is doing awesome now no more problems.Hope this helps your baby. |

Also when she drinks water after we have gone on a walk, she will vomit. It's like when she is really excited or wore out from a walk. I really need to have her checked out by a vet. |
You can have the anal glands removed, but it isn't really recommended unless the problem is a cronic one. If a dog/puppy has never had the glands expressed and isn't having any problems, then please don't let anyone express them because then it will be an ongoing thing. My 15 year old Chihuahua has never had hers expressed and neither has Zada 2 1/2 or Azrael 2 yr. 5 months and I don't plan on expressing them unless it becomes necessary. I have always home cooked for my dogs, so maybe that helps. |
No my baby has never vomited.I hope you can get some answeres soon. Quote:

not too long after I got maggie I notices her having a foul smelling odor about her. I had no clue why. I took her to the vet to see if he knew and it was her anal glands. they've done hers a few times since that, maybe 3. She doesnt seem to have a problem since April that was the last time. But its time for me to get them cked again and her nails cut, so she'll probably go to the vet next week. But my vet said sometimes if they have to start expressing them regularly and closer and closer together, they will sometimes remove them. But he said he wouldnt do that unless she got really bad from it as its a pretty painful surgery for them and also they just dont like removing them unless it is truly necessary. But maggies seems to be doing better lately since I've been making her food and feeding her our food. I boil hamburger and drain it and mix some cooked rice with it and I do the same with chicken. then I take a couple table spoons full of the hburger and put it in the cheap plastic bags and twist the tops then I do the chicken the same way. then I take a good plastic freezer bag/ quart size and it looks like i have little chicken and rice meat balls in the cheap bags and i put all the chicken and rice balls in the quart freeze bag and do the same with the hburger and rice balls and I make about 12 for each quart bag and all i have to do is take a small bag of which one I feed her that day and pop it in the micro for a few seconds on thaw setting for a few seconds until its thawed and maybe just a little warm and I put about a handful of her dry kibbles on a paper plate and pour the chicken or hburger over it and she eats it good and she also gets the dry dog food with it. I leave dry kibbles out for her all day but usually later at night she will go eat some more kibbles. Some days I scramble her an egg for bfast and she is eating much better as she use to go all day without food sometimes no matter what I would mix with her dry food. I hope this is helping that anal gland problem and if not, she is eating twice a day now plus some kibbles. so at least i dont worry now about her not eating. once in a while she'll have a day where she dont eat that much, but I think its due to the extensive dry hot days we've had lately. taking her to be cked next week on the gland and hope they are ok. please wish us luck. she doesnt have that smell about her anymore lately. sorry this was long. |
Add some fiber to her food. A pinch of wheat germ every other day will clean her right out! Make sure she gets enough water also. |

I'd try changing your baby's diet. It's funny how when you love your pet so much, NOTHING is too "delicate" to talk about, LOL:D |
I'd get your vet's opinion about this not your groomers...Most dogs never need them manually expressed. I can't understand the connection between vomiting and anal glands... That doesn't make sense to me. Usually when a dog has an anal gland problem they become impacted and swollen, not vomiting. |
I never experienced this with Bella at all. When I got Izzie I noticed her little behind looked bright pink and swollen (like little hemorroids) after she would poop. I thought maybe she was just sore from going. Then I noticed her little rear would be wet with a little poop, and I would clean her with a baby wipe. So this time when I gave her a bath I used the techique I read on here and sure enough they were full. Now she feels better and smells better. I hope this isn't an ongoing issue, but if it is I guess I'll just keep doing it. But only when I see she is having problems. She only scooted a couple of times on the grass. |

I talked to a staff member at my veternary hospital and she seemed to think that expressing the glands is something that they prefer doing. She said that to express them they have to do it from inside rather than just applying pressure to the outside. I did not tell her the breed of my dog though just that she was a puppy, maybe it is different for different breeds? She also said that puppies rarely need that done. I was relieved to not have to do it myself because I wouldn't know how. |
