doing your own grooming 1 Attachment(s) I took Peanut to the groomers last week and when he came home he kept itching and was restless at night. After a couple day I noticed some flea dirt. I have never had a problem with this groomer, but I did not paid $35 to come home with fleas. I use buddy wash at home and he get a bath once a week and I have not had any problems with fleas. What would I need to use to do the grooming at home? Here is a picture of how I like him to look. Thanks |
we just started grooming at home and i bought a small grooming table for 30 dollars at PetEdge.com and i also got a comb and some scissors... that's really all you need to start.. oh that and some treats ;) Layla isn't crazy about grooming time but i try and at least trim her a few times a week to get her used to it.. she hates getting around her face done but she is getting much more tolerant and i am getting ebtter too.. keep in mind if you are doing a full grooming with bath and blow dry it will take probably 1-2 hours, just make sure you have the time before you start :) good luck! |
hi i have heard that you are not to bath your dog often only 1 or 2 times a month as you wash all the oils out of their skin and fur |

I just started grooming both of mine at home..... I too got a grooming table for about $40 on ebay. As for tools, you will need a good set of clippers, a good pair of shears and what I think is the most important thing.....a good set of thinning shears. Shears can be pricey, but if they are kept sharpened and clean they will last and are well worth it. I also have some whal peanut clippers to do the sanitary parts (bum, ears and eyes) and brushes and combs of course. I also highly recommend this book (I bought mine from Amazon): How to Groom a Yorkshire Terrier Perfectly: A Step by Step Illustrated Guide for Grooming Your Yorkshire Terrier By: Tammy Sprinkle It will tell you all sorts of good stuff! |

You can buy one item or as many as you want. shipping isn't cheap if your order is under a certain amount. Maybe you could find some friends who would place an order along with yours. It looks like your dog is in a puppy cut. Petedge has nice clippers and different size blades. There is a chart in the catalog that tells you what each # blade is used for. As for fleas, you can add 20 drops of pennyroyal or Eucalyptus oil to 16 oz. of conditioner. You can also use Dr. Bronners pure castile liquid soap to shampoo the dog. Some of his liquid soaps have the scents already in them. It's all natural and won't strip the dogs hair and is gentle enough for a newborn baby. What you feed your dog is extremely important too at keeping them healthy and in tip top shape and when they are in very good health, then fleas usually wont bother them. Dogs fed with dog food usually have a constant battle with fleas. |
Thanks for all your replies. I am going to start looking for grooming supplies, as for the fleas, I am still finding one now and then. I use buddy wash and conditioner, they are lavender and mint. I read lavender is good for fleas. I was going to go to the health food store this weekend and get some different oils any suggestions? |
