Matting!! I need help with some advice on puppy coat...my baby is four months old and his coat is very easily tangeld. I brush him regularly but it doesnt seem to help, and i want him to have a long coat. Is it just because he has a puppy coat still or is this a sign of what his adult coat will be like? he has about 3/4 " of silver roots comming in. Can anyone shed any light? |
It could just be the puppy coat. You can cut down on the matting by using a good shampoo and conditioner. My Jewels has a cotton coat and I use Minksheen shampoo and pantene conditioner. I usually leave the pantene on the coat for about twenty minutes. If I do this once a week she usually doesnt get any matts. I also comb the hair daily. If you want to let the hair grow out a good thing to have also s a dematting comb. They have blades on them that can cut through the matts. One time when Jewels got matted it saved her from having to be shaved down |
My Louies coat sounds exactly the same as yours Frankiesmom. His is coming through silver as well. :D He is 4 months as well. chachi, is it OK to use Pantene conditioner? I have used it on Louie a couple of times, but not for 20 min, just a on/off, not because of matting, I do brush him twice a day, but he looks "scraggy" after a while -- like he needs a good brush :D |
Yes it is fine and it works great. It s human shampoos that you dont want to use. Leave it on 20 minutes though. You wont believe how soft the coat is after that |
So human conditioners are okay to use? My vet told me not to use human shampoos because the Ph is different in dogs. I am a stylist so you wont find panteen in my house as it has alot of sodium chloride in it that is even hard on human hair and skin. I do have a huge collection of salon quality conditioners, i am using a shampoo for dogs but have not even seen a dog conditioner. So it is safe to use and doesnt irritate the skin? also the matting brush you were talking about..is it the same as a slicker brush? that is what i bought and seems to work but he hates it and cries!! thanks for the advice!! |
Yes human conditioner is fine but not shampoo. Here is a link to the dematting comb I have http://www.arcatapet.com/item.cfm?cat=4512 |
