Coat (fur) questions :) I hope the experts here know the answers to my questions about my pup's fur color. (Jewels is 7-1/2 mos. old now.) There's a lovely color on Jewels' face and forehead, I call it blonde and I think that's the proper color name. On her legs and paws the fur is a caramel color -- is this color technically considered to be tan? She didn't start out with that color and when it came in it kind of looked like "dirty fur" to me and I didn't care for it but I've come to appreciate it now. :) The black fur on most of her body seems to be lightening up considerably at the roots. I suppose that will be her ultimate color when the black fur has all grown out and been cut, not sure how long that will take. The lighter color looks like a faded or "bleached-out" gray. What is the official color name for this? Blue? Steel? Gray? Silver? (Jewel's dad's fur was dark without the bleached-out look and her mom had a lot of blonde fur.) And finally, how many months does it take for a Yorkie pup's fur to grow to the ground? Wish I could post pictures but, well, I'm one of those who can't. Thanks you all.:animal-pa |
It sounds like you are describing the head and legs as a gold and tan. Hard to tell which without a picture. The color on her back can stay black or turn blue. It can even fall somewhere in between. If you look around on the site you will see all different colors. If you Yorkie has papers you will see the colors. They have blue/tan, blue/gold, black/tan, and black/gold. I may have missed a color not sure.Those are the colors recongized by AKC. |
Speaking of colors. My little Duke is the standard tan/black except for his head which is completely White. I have never seen another that looks that him. he was on alot of meds (antibiotics) as a pup. Could that have cause his head to change color. I took him by the breeder and she was suprized by the color. both parents have the standard colors. Any help or ideas on this????????:confused: |

What you have described is the desired Gold and Blue. Your pup will go through a multitude of changes from now until mature. Yorkshire Terriers are considered pups until the age of 2. Full coat is not reached until 2 years. But, that is dependent on the texture, genetics and coat care. |
Thanks for the replies. It sounds like Jewels is probably considered blue/gold. When I check the box on the AKC registration application, how important is it if I check blue/gold and it turns out that she's actually blue/tan? (The previous vet we saw didn't seem to get many Yorkie patients.) |
The colors fascinate me. Spicy looks SO different from his early puppy pictures...you can tell that from my avatar. His face is so light now. Will it stay that way? |
