Oiling
 
hello,
i am new here. my show yorkies just arrived recently which i have waited for a year for them. what oil do most people use here? is oiling necessary? please advise. thanks.

YinSing, There are a few exhibitors on here that can share with you what they use.

I myself use Emu Oil, but bathe every 4 days, use it after their bath, but alternate leaving it off every other bath....just to allow their skin to breath and avoid clogging the skin. Almond oil is another good oil.

hello mary, thank you so much for your sharing. i hope to learn more about yorkies here.

what is the purpose for oiling? does it help in maintaining the coat color and texture? i am currently using pure paws light oil and cream conditioner. i was told to mix the cream conditioner with the light oil. anyone here happen to use them too?

i was reading the other posting on coat type here. i still have doubt about my yorky coat type. what should i do?

The purpose of oiling is to protect the coat from breaking. The draw back is having to bathe more often as oil does attract dirt. The secret to growing coat is feeding quality food and keeping the coat clean (bathing every 4 days for a show dog). Keeping them off of carpet, grass, anything that can break coat. Only allowing them on coat gentle fabrics, such as satin. And then of course when the coat does get longer, wrapping is very beneficial.

Coat color & texture is based on genetics......

I used Pure Paws at one time too, but now have changed to Plush Puppy products. Pure Paws did not fare well on my dogs skin, however, I know that it has worked very well for others.

How old are your new dogs?
i have a boy that is 21 months old and by right, it should be long and toucing the floor now but it is not. is half way length. the breeder told me that his coat breaks easily. my girl is 11 months old. both coat seem to be dark blue but the boy's coat is wavy. how come? i am growing both coat at the moment.

Full coat is usually not reached until approximately 2 years of age. However, other determining factors can contribute to it. Correct silk coats take longer, genetics, nutrition, and how the coat has been taken care of.....wavyiness is not desirable, but if silk in texture can be worked around....

let me try to snap some shots on my boy's coat and post it here and perhaps you can advise me further.

i think what i need now is real hands on experience rather than reading. someone to guide me and show me the coat types and etc but unfortunately cant get that here.

I use All Systems products: shampoo, conditioner and lanolin oil and I'm very satisfied with the products:

My yorki is 8 months old and I bath him every 7 days.
