How often do you cut their nails?? Well, I did it! I cut Hootie & Hobbs nails 2nite all by myself!!!!!! I was SO nervous clipping that first nail, but when I got going, I wasn't nervous anymore. Rest assured I had the Kwick Stop sitting at an arm's length! Anyway, now that I am confident that I can clip their nails myself, how often should it be done?? |
I never know how short to clip. I don't think I am clipping short enough. How short did you clip. Is there any way I can see a pic? |

Thanks, so I guess I am doing it right. I think I will do a little after ever other bath unless they look like they don't need it. |
I take a nip off of their feet every time I bathe them on Sunday. That way I can shorten them up some. |
I have Jaden and Jewelina's done by the vet once every two weeks, if they go in for grooming before then I also have them trimmed then. I find it's easier to just nip them like you said rather than letting them grow really long and having to have a lot cut off. Sometimes theirs gets done once a week, sometimes it's once every two weeks depending on how they are wearing down. I'd go with whatever you feel comfortable doing and :congrats: on doing their nails all by yourself! Jaden had a bleeder one time a long time ago when he was getting his nails trimmed by my cousin and after I saw that I was like...I can never do that! Sometimes I think I'm more afraid of trimming their nails than they are of having it done! Maybe one day I'll be brave like yourself and overcome my fear of getting a bleeder  |

WOW....I am hearing a lot of week and two weeks. I have been doing it like monthly or bi-monthly - is that too long? I do not find them growing out too much - maybe it is because they shorten from walks and running around my pool deck. I dunno....what do you all think? Should I be doing it more? |
I cut my dogs nails once every three to four weeks, but I use a dremel tool on them EVERY week. If they're just pups or the Yorkies, then I cut them once a week and skip the dremel tool all together. |
Caren, you may just have dogs w/ longer nails and think that's normal. A good rule of thumb is that if you can hear them walking on a hard surface, like your kitchen floor, they're too long. Or if they're standing and the nail touches the ground they're certainly too long. |
Once a month is fine if you are going to have to pay someone to do it for you. However, if you do it yourself you might as well just do a little bit every week or two. As far as how much to cut off...cut off a little bit and look at the cut surface. If it is the same color all the way through (whitish) cut another little bit. Continue taking little slices until you see a black dot appear in the middle. Then stop. Don't stress, you are still a little ways away from the quick but you are getting close. Use this nail as a guide for cutting the rest of the nails. Cut just a touch less on the rest of them. If you make a mistake and cut one too short don't get upset. Put a little quickstop on it (if you have some) or some cornstarch, or cinnamon and move on to the next nail. Your little one will be fine, really. |
Summerlin's nails were clipped just before I got her three weeks ago. I finally got up the nerve last night to clip her nails myself. It took me forever! But only because I was afraid of cutting too much and hurting her. She sat still for me to do just about the whole time. I am so proud of myself - at least I don't have to pay someone to do this.... :) |
I clip mine once a week, just a bit each time. It costs $15 for someone to do it here. $15 every week is kinda expensive. His nails are still pretty long though and I certainly hear him when he walks on the kitchen tiles. |
i do mine once a week |
