Trimming Whiskers?
 
For everyone who keeps their Yorkie in a full coat; Do you trim the whiskers to help keep the "mustache" down. I've contemplating doing this but I didn't know if it would cause problems in her certain perceptions. Also, if you do trim how much do you trim off and do you trim the eye whiskers and well?

i trim anything and everything that get into lexi's way..

LOL! Her whiskers keep getting in the way. I comb them and moisturize them down but they just keep popping up and making her "mustache" pop up too. But I thought if I trimmed them it would mess up her perception of certain things. Guess I will be trimming them on the next bath day!

Funny you ask... I didn't noticed Luna's "moustaches" until a little time ago, because I decided to buy a flea comb to comb her face between baths to get rid of the food, and then I started noticing I pulled them out without willing to... :eek:
;)She didn't seem to bother, but I felt awful, and since then I just trim them very short... I have not noticed any change in her, like hitting her face, or something, and for sure her hair lies down nicer, so I would say, go, and trim them...:rolleyes:

Are you talking about those course wire like "guard" hairs? If so, the answer is yes....I pull back all the regular hair away from the guard hair and with baby manicure scissors as close as possible to the skin. It makes the coat on the muzzle lay flat when you clip them out.

No, it doesn't cause problems. I'm a show breeder and it's common practice amongst exhibitors.

The eyebrows can be trimmed down too. Makes for a much cleaner topknot

Thanks so much! Yes, I was taking about the coarse hairs that just want to stick up every which way. I kept scrutnizing pictures of Yorkies in a show coat but couldn't tell. I will be sure to trim them on her next bath.

Hair hairs must be pretty stubborn because I comb her all the time with the flee comb and they never come out or even lay down. Stubborn whiskers!

It's easier to do when the coat is wet.

Now you know a grooming method that is used by exhibitors. It does make everything smooother when you're putting them together for the ring. The course hairs are known as guard hairs and those that are at the top of the eyes are eyebrows.

Some tweeze them out....I don't have the heart....so I use the manicure scissors with the rounded tip....I'm such a weenie and don't want to do anything that causes discomfort.

I could never pluck either. I can't even bring myself to tweeze my own eyebrows, so I don't expect her to manage (she's so sensitive), LOL! I heard something about oiling them but that didn't work either. I'd also be worried that if my plucked incorrectly she may get an ingrown whisker....hmm can they get ingrown whiskers?

Yes they can. They can get ingrown hairs, without having anything done to them.

Okay I did it. I have to say, Wow! It made a big difference. Her "mustache" laid down without me having to manipulate it to. However, I was halfway up her body with blow dryer before I realized I needed to trim the whiskers. So, I didn't get to trim them with her "mustache" totally wet. Thus, I didn't get as close as I would have liked to. I also accidentally plucked one out and it didn't even faze her. Thanks for the advice!

The first picture is before I trimmed them and the second is after. Can you tell the difference?

Good for you, it definately did make a difference.

....pulling them usually doesn't faze them, although I did look down after I did it by mistake...and there was a lil speck of blood.....like I said I'm a weenie.

By the way she is a cutie pie.

what an improvement ... I just went and combed Monday's "face" ...
I was afraid to cut anything .... I'll leave that to the groomer ....
but it made a difference in your baby's face ... wow!!!:smile:
