Stinky Yorkie Hi! I am a new owner of a Yorkshire Terrier. He's adorable, but I noticed that he begins to stink after a few days of giving him a bath. I used to give him a bath once a week, but I noticed that he started to get flakes so I changed it to every two weeks. What shampoo and conditionaire should I use? I also use baby wipes to wipe him down so he doesnt stink as much since he sleeps on my bed, but that only works for that night. Also, another thing. His fangs are growing, but his baby fangs hasn't fallen off yet. Is that okay? Should I take him to the vet so they can extract the fangs or what. Please help. Thank you! |
I have the same problem with my 3 yorkies. They start to stink before a week is up. I was bathing 1 time a week but my groomer told me they should not be bathed more than every 2 weeks or they could develope a skin condition. Their skin seems okay after 2-3yrs of weekly bathing but I don't want to cause any skin problems. I've tried doggie cologne but they just smell like stinky dog with cologne. I would love suggestions from YT pros. |
[F]My boy gets bathed once a week or twice if he needs it. I don't have a problem with him being stinky but I do have the problem that he does look greasy and unkept after a few days. He has a silky coat. I also have a poodle and cat which get bathed once a week.........they are so used to it, that it a custom in my household. My yorkie had really bad flaky skin but after using missing link on him......it disappeared completely. This week, he got bathed twice because it snowed and they sanded down the sidewalk and he got very dirty on his walk....... I am not saying you should wash him twice but just sharing that I bathe him 2 times a week most of the time and he has no skin or coat issues. He always smells great like the other animals. ;) I never wipe his whole body with the pet wipes. I just do his belly and butt area (he wears belly bands at times). I don't use doggy cologne because the poodle is sensitive to them and starts sneezing up a storm. My recommendation would be first: 1). Check what kind of food(s) you are feeding him? 2). Does he need his anal glands expressed? 3). What grooming products are you using? 4). Are you rinsing all of the products off his coat? Good luck :) [/FONT] |
kirby was the same way so we had his hair underneath scooped. b/c when they pee, it gets into the hair. i think if you have him scooped, the problem will go away. |
? Sorry if I seem ignorant but what do you mean by "scooped"? :aimeeyork :animal-pa |

the groomer will shave all the hair underneath but keep the hair on the sides. this way, when he goes pees, the pee does not get into the hair. once we had this done to kirby, the smell went away. *** they only shave the hair underneath so you cannot tell by looking at them...unless the boy is laying on his back. |
let me see if i can find a picture of kirby laying on his back. i am sure it will look x-rated |
this is the only picture i have and his hair has grown back. they will shave it up to his ribs. i don't normally take pictures with is position but he was sleeping and i thought it was cute. |
Darn, the pic didn't come up..........I wanted to see too :D |
for some reason, it is not letting upload the picture. |
wait a minute and i will try again |
Is it his ears that stink? That could be it. I was bathing Chloe once a week, but her coat was starting to look dull, not shiny. Plus I heard it's bad for their skin. So I have been doing it about once in between groomings (about 2.5 weeks). I use a finishing spray from petsmart to brush out her hair, and that makes her smell good. I don't ever think she smells off anymore unless it is her ears. |
it keeps telling me invalid post. i have resized it so i know it is good. let me try again |
1 Attachment(s) lets see how this looks. the pictures become very fuzzy when i resize. now his hair has started growing back in. you can kinda see he was only shaved up to his ribs |

I bath mine every two weeks because of all the reasons already stated. I use Royal Treatment products... which I love. Just about every 3-4days I use the spray on conditioner and brush out their coat... along with clean their eyes and ears really good. The conditioner makes them smell like a giant oatmeal cookie and I gives them a little shine. It last for days. The brushing helps them not look all messy. I also shave around the private areas so that nothing "sticks" to the fur (ewwwww). That keeps my dogs smelling quite nice:D |
Stinky Yorkie His ears are stinky, but I clean them about every other day. Its his face that is mostly stinky. I guess coz he digs with his nose outside. I tried getting a face towel and soaking it in warm water with a little bit of baby cologne and I wiped him all over with it. It seemed to work. Im gonna have to see how he smells when I get home. :D |
LOL, stinky little boys!!! Our girls smell so sweet and the boys wellll...they're little stinky boys. Its usually their ears, face, butt or belly. There is an ear solution that turns to powder once put in the ear, smells like alcohol, but helps tremendously with ear odor. Make sure his ears are getting good and dry after baths. Moist ears will stink. Its made by Gold Metal Pets. Ear drying solution. Its a creme to powder that you place two drops down into the ear, rub the fiirst third of the ear and wa la...Shaving down the belly makes it easier to use pet wipes or baby wipes, and I use one or the other twice daily. Warm, wet wash cloth to the beard and face at night after brushing teeth...all of this helps wash some of the "boyness" away.:D |
