Ears Riley is 16 wks old today. Her ears were already standing when we got her at 11 wks. Does anyone know about when I will need to have her groomed for the first time? I want to keep the standing ears on her. Hubby refuses them for Penny, but I'm determined to have Riley's up. |
She doesn't need a groomer. Just keep her brushed daily and you could just take yours or your husbands electric shaver and cut the hair off the front and back of the ears to 1/3 of the way down. I use my husbands beard and mustache trimmer on the girls ears. For the nails, just get a rough emery board (wal-mart, 2 to a pack, black) and file them a little each week or after each bath when you have them wrapped in a towel. :p For the pads, you can either use a small electric razor like the mustache trimmer, or a blunt nose scissors to cut out some of the hair if it gets too thick between the pads. |

Don't take her to a groomer unless they are familiar with the yorkie....they'll screw them up each and every time. The top 2/3 of the ear should be shaved. There should be a V pattern from the bottom part of the 2/3 and fan out. Use a mustache trimmer, but I highly recommend a Wahl Peanut, it can also be used for trimming the foot pads. |

If you are not planning on grooming your yorkie yourself, it is best to start the process as early as possible, I like to get them at least by 4 months as there is much to learn at the groomers. Puppies that are started early get used to the process and some even look forward to it. It can be harder on a dog to wait till they are older, just my opinion |
