Flaky Skin Hi, Any suggestions on what to do with my yorkies flaky skin? It looks like dandruff. I know you are not supposed to bathe them too much. I usually try to wait a week and a 1/2. In between I wipe him down with pet wipes. Is there a shampoo I can use? Help! |
Karla - is Izzy itching, or does he just have dry, flaky skin? I belive that oatmeal shampoo is good for this. Petsilk makes an oatmeal shampoo that is supposed to be good. |

Try a new brand of dogfood or perhaps a suppliment. Healthy skin and hair comes from within (that's what my mentor says). I even put a teeny bit of bacon grease in their food about once a month. Just don't overdue it. |
Can you get petsilk shampoo locally or do you have to order it? What type of supplement should I use? |
It isn't the frequent bathing that causes dry skin. You can use a very mild shampoo (I use the #1 All systems Super Cleaning & Conditioning Shampoo) http://mjmcompany.com/1allsystems-grooming.htm This shampoo is for sensitive skin, fragile coats, puppies, kittens, residue free and safe enough to use every day. You will need to give Omega fatty acids in the puppys food. I use cod liver oil. You can also use fish oil. |
i feel for ya! first make sure the food you are feeding him has no corn... a usual suspect! you can also try oatmeal baths. layla is currently getting them for dry flaky skin!! put oatmeal in a nylon and bath him with it. next you can try giving him olive oil, i put about 1/2 tsp in layla's wet food in the morning, and like others were saying... an oatmeal shampoo is great! i see you live in detroit.. i'm in london ontario... i think it's the dry winter weather.. layla was bad in the summer.. but not this bad!! so give those things a try! it may also be a food allergy to something.. sometimes chicken... i don't give layla food with chicken because a woman at the pet store said some dogs are allergic to it.. so i just wanted to stear clear! good luck! |

I had a feeling it could be the weather too. I just started happening last week, which is when the weather got really cold here. I will try the oatmeal shampoo and olive oil. I think his food is fine because this is the first time the dry skin has happened. Thanks for the great suggestions!:) |
The Espree company make a great remosturizer, when ever I see flaky skin on any of the clients dogs we use it and let it soak for about 10 minutes and it is a miracle product. I have used it on my dogs too if ever I see dry skin. You can probably order it right from the company. It is true that most dry skin comes from what they are eating or other health issues but sometimes it is just dry skin. If it keeps up check with your vet to weed out other possibilities. |

I would add a suppliment like Missing Link or Grizzly Salmon Oil. You want to use a oatmeal shampoo and a moisturizing conditioner |
