clippers Does anyone know what kind of clipper/shaver would be best for a soft coated Mini - Schnauzer? Of course I would also like it to work for my other babies too. I'm clueless as to what kind is good and lasts, etc... Does anyone have some advice and suggestions for me???? Thanks, omega |
On advice from another member here, I bought the Wahl Peanut. It is a tiny clipper with "big" power. I love it. I am just doing more trim jobs with it though -- nothing all over yet. This summer, I may have to go to a schnauzer or westie cut for my two and test it on a larger scale. |
Thanks, I have a little one for trimming and such -I'm looking for one that is larger for more of a major shave for my mini schnauzer. I have no idea what kind is good or not - if anyone can recommend anything, I'd appreciate it! omega |
I love my Andis, you will need a #7FC blade as well. It comes with a #10 and looks like they are on sale at Petedge. The 10 you use on the face on the schnauzer, the 7 you can use on the body. It will take it down fairly short. For a cotton coated Schnauzer you will likely have to go fairly short anyway. A #5 will give you a slightly longer cut and a #4 longer still. http://www.petedge.com/shopping/prod...67&itemID=6142 |
Thanks so much for the info!! omega |
No problem. I am a professional groomer for 15 years. This is the clipper I have used the last 10 years. I used to have an Oster but they are too bulky and heavy. Andis is much lighter yet powerful. |

I use the same thing for cutting down. Whal Peanut I only use for trimming ears and foot pads. Mary |
I now have an Andis Clipper too -- it came with the #10 blade, what other blades will I need for Yorkie grooming? I am going to let them grow for now but will go down to a puppy cut for summer. Maybe 4FC? It leaves hair 3/8 inch. Can you just get the same effect by using the comb attachments? That is what I did before with my "cheapy" clippers that only had the one attached blade. But they must have all those different blades for a reason. So I have the Wahl Peanut for ears and pads and the Andis clipper for body hair. Which do you use on face? Or should I use scissors? What scissors do you all recommend? The prices are scaring me -- but I know it makes a difference. I am already feeling sorry for my two pups with all of the trial and error they have to face. But I really want to do them myself. |

What do you mean the face? Do you mean for obtaining the round puppy look? I use curved and straight and thinning shears..... I'm going to recommend to you, what was recommended to me when I went to grooming school....don't pay a lot of money for your scissors until you become proficient in their use.....too much dropping and ruining them.... |
Thanks -- I have one DVD on grooming now. I will take a look at the AKC site and see about another. I am sure I will need all the reviewing of them I can get. As to the face -- yes -- and I think it was probably the thinning shears I was missing. When I did my late Maggie's face it tended to look choppy no matter what I did. But just mentioning thinning shears makes me realize how to fix that I think. Ben's hair is very thin and silky -- so I may let his continue to grow. But Sadie seems to have much thicker hair and I am sure she will need it shorter for summer if they intend to play outside as much as they do now. The last two mornings have been a little cold in FL and they are big babies about that! |
