question about expressing anal gland
 
What exactly is expessing anal glands? Is it necessary & who usually does it? Vet? Groomer? What is the purpose? I've never heard of it. I have 2 females & 1 male. Will they all need it to be done?

If you've never had to do it before, chances are you will never have to worry about it. count your lucky stars ! LOL its gross and smelly and not fun for the dog and whoever is expressing them. if you do a search for anal glands on here i'm sure you'll find lots of threads about it

The groomer used to do it. Now i'm my own groomer. I don't do it. My vet will do it. Maggie jumped up on my lap once and hers drained all over my pants. Smelly and slimy.

When you see them dragging their butt on the floor that is usually their way of keeping them from clogging. You will smell a bad odor if they get blocked & I think yes it does need to be done now & again. You pull the anal apart, push back & then sqeeze it together pointing outward. Kinda like sqeezing a zit. It grosses me out thinking about it, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

I only allow my vet to take care of anal glands. According to Dr. Amy, the glands should only be expressed when needed, not as part of a regular normal grooming. The glands secrete lubricants as well as doggie scent. If the glands are full and backed up and are exprressed incorrectly, they could burst inside the dog setting up an infection.

I am sure that there are many very competent groomers who routinely express anal glands successfully, but it only takes one mistake.....

How do they get clogged?

I've seen Rocky scoot across the floor while he was sitting a couple of times, but he has no odor or anything. And it's not a constant thing with him. Does this mean his anal glands need to be expressed? Or is it just a new way to move himself that he came up with?

if he only does it every so often then no he doesn't need to have his glands expressed. it only needs to be done if there is constant licking and scooting

Well my vet said that this glads help the dogs push the poop out smoothly or something of that source and when they get full they need
to be expressed..Like chattiesmom I will not let anyone do it but my vet as it only takes one mistake..

LOL....I might be the 'odd ball' but I don't find it bad at all. CNA and NURSING jobs are much dirtier :D

If you ask me, I rather smell my dog's glands than that of most humans :eek:
