grooming noose
 

I just got a grooming table and I bought an extra noose thingy that goes around the neck and hind quarters.

I'm just wondering if the noose around the neck will hurt their necks or cause trachea problems? If they move around or pull or anything, can't that hurt them?

i would love to know the answer too... groomer use them all the time.. i think

I never used the neck noose...I put the noose around the body, gives enough support and restaint for me to get them groomed...and never walk away.

that is a better way to do it... great idea

I ask my groomer to not use the noose, it just scares me to death. I read somewhere about a woman that lost her dog because the groomer walked away and the poor baby strangled:cry:

I never put the noose around the neck either. I seldom use the noose at all, I have very good hands and the dog seldom will try to jump off the grooming talbe.
When I am not sure about the dog, I put the noose in front of the shoulder on one side and put it behind the front leg on the other side of the dog. It will restrain the dog without causing any worry about pressing on the throat.
Never ever leave a dog unattended on a grooming table. If you can't reach something you need, scoop up the dog and hang onto it.

When I was younger I watched one of my mothers Poodles jump off of a table while being groomed, the groomer had one hand on the dog and was reaching with her other hand for a comb to fluff her out... Well moms dog decided that she was done and was off... It all happened so fast! It was like slow motion almost... the dog just slipped her grip and pushed off.... she went flying through the air and the groomer twirled around just in time to see her hit the ground. and it was at that impact that everything went to hell... Adults were screaming, freaking out, mom was crying the women were slack jawed... Bon Bon, her black tea cup Poodle had broken her hip and fractured something else... I forget now what it was... God I was so young... But anyone who has heard the sound of a dog in that kind of pain will never forget it!

My girls pulled on the noose a little the first time... but after that, they did NOT fight it... And the key to NOT HANGING your dog is knowing how to PROPERLY use it... Its a tool, and like any tool there is a right/safe and wrong/unsafe way to use it. The noose is not a replacement for supervision while a dog is on the table(I know you all know that), it is just a third hand, one used to secure the dog... freeing one of your hands to use another tool, like a comb or the clippers... If you are within 12 to 18 inches of your dog, you really should not have to worry about him or her hanging, after all that is less than the arms length of most adults.... But if your dog is not being "held" by that third "hand", the noose, you could be 2 inches away and he or she could still slip right through your hand and hit the floor... Why would you take that chance??


And I forget who it was that said that they asked their groomer not to use the noose... If thats the case... Add to that that they please sit on the floor while they groom your baby!!!! Cause in a grooming shop, there are a hundred things to catch a dogs attention and any one of them can send a dog soaring off a table!! At home a fly buzzing around is enough to get Pixie going! Just think what a new dog walking in to the shop will do! Yikes... Before I got my table and noose, I brought on some serious back aches grooming my girls on the living room floor.. lol But I would never have them up on the counter, its just not safe... Sit on the floor if your not using a restraint of some kind....

Thanks, Kathryn, I will ask my groomer to groom Luna on the floor, or to put the noose around her body. I did tell them that she has a tendency to want to back off of a table/counter. Just this morning I was trying to give her her medicine in the kitchen and she was trying to get away and almost fell off of the counter:eek: I had my husband hold her for me after that, it was scary! I'm not offended at all, I thank you for telling the story of Bon Bon, it's a good warning to heed!

I could not sleep last night for fear that I would wake up to 30 pissed of women who were posting about colapsed tracheas! I thought for sure I had stepped on someones toes.... Thank you for not being offened...

I was standing watching at the groomers window at petsmart and was surprised when one of the groomers walked off and left a mini poodle stanging alone with the noose around its neck.Now there were several other groomers around,but they wouldn't have been able to act fast enough in my opinion. Was enough to leave me wondering if that isn't what happened to Shadow at his old groomer who always used a noose and told me it was better than them falling. I think I would rather have a broken bone than a strangled pet, or broken neck.
I understand they can't groom on the floor, still leaves me concerned. Maybe someone needs to come up with an idea for a grooming table with three sides.

I agree with you. As for groomers leaving the dog on the table alone, I would never do that. I will either take my dog off the table or have someone stand with the dog if I have to walk away

I never thought about the fact that the dog can get distracted by other dogs, etc. I will ask if they'll sit on the floor with her next time. They did tell me that two groomers worked on her, so that gave me confidence that she was safe, but you never know. If they won't agree to what I want, I'll just have to find someone that will ;)

Kathryn, now who can get upset with you? We might not agree, but upset? Never! What a tragic story you shared. I think you have some great ideas about the grooming noose, however, I don't think a noose will keep a dog from taking that fatal leap....

Always, you must keep your hands and eyes and 100% of your attention stuck on your dog when you have them in a situation where they can get hurt ...whether it is in the sink, on a grooming table, opening the front door, chewing on a chew toy.... the list is endless
