Taking Monty to the Groomer It is always such a traumatic experience. I am going to try a new groomer who will allow me to be there while he is being groomed. He doesn't like it at all and he hates the vet and pretty much anyone else but me for that matter.:luvu: Any suggestions for preparing my little man for the experience. This new groomer says she takes extra time to get her clients comfortable with her, the clippers, surroundings etc. I guess I will find out since I will be there. He reminds me of a little boy going to the barber shop and constantly squirming in the chair. Any ideas? Thanks, |
How old is your pup? Does he stand still for you when you do groom him at home (eye cleanings and such)? |
Hope it went well. My dogs seem to do better for the groomers than me. Cali is getting better with sitting still but she's 16 months old now. Post pics if you can. |

Monty He is about 4 years old now. He is a rescue, we got him when he was a puppy. They told us he was abused. I don't know how but he doesn't like to be brushed, cleaned or groomed in any way. Even by me. He is very scared of a camera, which I think is odd. My daughter has tried to take pictures but he runs and hides. I have put a stop to any picture taking until we find a way to take them without scaring him. We will find a sneaky way to get pictures and I will definitely post them. Have to show off my handsome little man. He is the coolest! :cool: Just concerned about stressing him with the grooming, but it has to be done. |
You should try to take him for few visits to the place before having him groomed , this way he will adjust to new place . |
Good for you for rescuing! I love it when poor pups find good new homes! I would suggest working with him a bit each day to get him used to it. Put him up on a counter and pick up his paws, rub his ears, touch his face, play with his hair... If he's not used to you doing it he probably wouldn't allow a stranger to do it either.... Just do it for a few minutes each day. Be patient but consistent. Don't give in to his fussing right away, if you do he'll think he won and he'll keep doing it... I bet after doing that for a month or so he'll be a lot better. If you stay to watch at the groomer's, I'd probably try to stay out of sight. Sometimes they get fidgety and misbehave if they see Mom is there... He'd want you to come save him! |
Thanks I appreciate all the replies and great advice. It makes sense to get him used to the place and the groomer first. I have been by to talk with her a couple of times (without him unfortunately) and I think she will do as good a job as can be done with a moving target. We will definitely need patience because he is just as stubborn and hard headed as he is cute. He loves to go for a ride in the car and enjoys it when we get out with him on the leash and he gets to explore a new place, but when I open the door to the vets office and he gets a whiff the brakes go on and I have to carry the little wiggle worm to the table for the vet to examine him - then the wrestling match is on, but I guess I wouldn't have him any other way - loads of personality and way cool. Thanks again everyone for the advice. If it takes a dozen trips to get it done then thats what we'll do. |
